Utah Utes vs West Virginia Mountaineers Pick and Prediction September 27th, 2025
Use Code SSWC West Virginia will look to elevate itself to a record over .500 as it faces the Utah Utes on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. EST in Milan Puskar Stadium. Check out our Utah Utes vs West Virginia Mountaineers pick and prediction here!
Utah has a current record of 3-1, but they are 0-1 in the conference, putting them towards the bottom of their conference. They were 2-7 last year in conference play so a win will put them in a great position to have a better year than last. Meanwhile, West Virginia has a 2-2 overall record and an 0-1 record in conference play, putting them second-to-last in the Big 12. West Virginia was middle of the pack with a 5-4 conference record, so they will want to make sure they don't fall to 0-2 in the Big 12 with a win here. Utah is favored by 12.5 points while the total is set at 47.5 points. Can the Mountaineers earn a home upset win?

Utah Looking to Quell the Upset
Utah earned their first loss of the season last week, losing to Texas Tech by a score of 34-10. Devon Dampier completed 25/38 passes for 162 yards, no touchdowns, and two interceptions. The ground game was virtually non-existent, as Dampier had the most carries with 11 and NaQuari Rogers only had 37 yards rushing, but it was a team-high. Ryan Davis caught ten passes, but Dallen Bentley had 75 receiving yards to lead the team. Nate Ritchie had ten tackles and three tackle assists to lead the team and John Henry Daley had the only sack. Tao Johnson and Jackson Bennee had an interception each.

Utah will be bringing in 22 transfers, while 31 players will be leaving the school. Wayshawn Parker, Creed Whittemore, Blake Cotton, and Larry Simmons are the main faces of the incoming transfers, while Cam Calhoun, Carsen Ryan, and Simote Pepa are the biggest names to depart the program.
Dampier is the primary QB for the Utes with a 70.9% completion percentage for 790 yards, seven touchdowns, and two interceptions. He is also the leading rusher with 225 yards on 44 carries. Rogers has the most rushing touchdowns with four while Parker is second in both yards and touchdowns with 214 yards and three touchdowns, respectively. Ryan Davis is the clear-cut #1 wideout with 29 receptions for 241 yards, but Bentley has the most touchdown receptions with two. On the defensive end, Ritchie is the only one with 20+ total tackles, and he has 25. John Henry Daley has an impressive six sacks on the season already while Bennee has a team-high three passes defended. He is also leading the team with three interceptions while nobody else on the team has more than one. Six players are listed on Utah's injury report, with three players listed as questionable while three are out for this upcoming contest.
West Virginia Hoping for a Home Win
The Mountaineers are also hoping for a bounce-back win after losing by a score of 41-10 against the Kansas Jayhawks. Nicco Marchiol had the majority of reps at QB, completing 15/27 passes for 126 yards, no touchdowns, and one interception. Jaylen Henderson was arguably the best player on the offense this past week with 79 rushing yards on only seven carries, including one touchdown run. Grayson Barnes was the only receiver with 3+ receptions, but Cyncir Bowers had the most yards with an abysmal 26. Four different players had three tackles and one tackle assist on the defensive end.
West Virginia is going through an overhaul with 53 incoming transfers and 51 outgoing transfers. Traylon Ray, Tomas Rimac, and CJ Donaldson are the major departures for the progra,m while Jimmori Robinson, Eddie Kelly Jr., and Carson Lee are the main incoming transfers. With all these transfers, there might be some growing pains early in the season, but with a 2-2 record, this is the time to prove that the Mountaineers are for real.
Marchiol is the leading QB for West Virginia with a 67.3% completion rate with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Tye Edwards is the current leader in the running back department with 141 yards on 25 carries. Jahiem White is right behind him, though, with 24 carries for 133 yards, and both have three touchdowns each. Cam Vaughn has the most receiving yards with 215 on 14 catches, but Barnes has 12 receptions to his name as well. Both players have caught a TD pass too. Fred Perry has a team-high 25 total tackles, including 16 solo tackles. Chase Wilson has the most sacks with three, while four different players are tied with two passes defended each. Darrian Lewis has two interceptions to lead the team. Nine players are on the injured list for West Virginia, including White who is out, and Marchiol, who is questionable.
Utah vs. West Virginia Pick
Spread Pick for Utah vs West Virginia
- Utah -12.5 (4 units)
The biggest question mark is the status of Marchiol, but even if he does play, I'm assuming he will be limited at best. West Virginia is still dealing with the significant number of transfers coming in and out, while Utah has covered in five of their last six games. On the other side, West Virginia has dropped four of their last six against the spread. Up until playing #12-ranked Texas Tech, Utah has dominated its opponents, while West Virginia has struggled against teams like Ohio.
Over/Under pick for Utah vs West Virginia
- Over 47.5 (4 units)
Over seems to be the right play here, as Utah has scored an average of over 45 points per game in their wins. West Virginia has had a couple of instances where they've scored 30+ points this season and while I don't expect them to reach that level. They should reach at least double digits in points. I expect Utah to take care of the rest. Both teams will be looking to improve upon their performance from last week, particularly on the offense. Neither starting QB threw a TD pass, but I imagine that will change this week.
