UTEP vs Michigan Picks and Prediction for Saturday September 19 2026

By: Kim Smith Published 09/13/2026, 04:05 PM ET

The UTEP Miners travel to Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, Michigan, to face the Michigan Wolverines on Saturday, September 19, 2026. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 PM ET. UTEP enters at 1-1 after opening its season with a 51-0 loss at Oklahoma, while Michigan is 2-0 and gets another opportunity in front of the massive home crowd at the Big House. The Miners have already experienced one road game against national-level competition this season, and Saturday provides another enormous challenge against a Big Ten opponent. At the time of this writing the odds were not released. Be sure to check out our free college football picks for more NCAAF predictions throughout the season.

UTEP Faces Another Enormous Road Challenge

UTEP's 51-0 loss at Oklahoma provided a harsh introduction to the 2026 season. The Miners managed only 198 total yards and couldn't score against the Sooners, demonstrating how difficult it can be for this offense to consistently move the football when facing a major talent disadvantage. UTEP has since improved to 1-1, but traveling to Michigan presents many of the same problems.

The experience at Oklahoma should at least help UTEP prepare for the environment. The Miners have already dealt with a hostile road stadium and the speed of an elite opponent, so Michigan shouldn't produce complete culture shock. The problem is finding a way to create offense. UTEP cannot spend the afternoon repeatedly putting its defense back on the field after short possessions.

UTEP's best opportunity to cover a potentially massive number is to shorten the game and avoid giving Michigan easy points. The Miners need to limit turnovers, sustain enough possessions to drain clock and force Michigan to methodically earn its touchdowns. If the Wolverines begin creating defensive or special-teams scores, the spread could become irrelevant quickly.

Michigan Has an Opportunity to Win With Its Defense

Michigan is 2-0 after navigating its opening two games and now gets a significant drop in competition. The Wolverines opened with a narrow 13-12 victory over Western Michigan before moving into a much more significant matchup against Oklahoma. Whatever offensive questions remain, Michigan's overall roster advantage against UTEP should be substantial.

This is a matchup where the Wolverines shouldn't need an explosive passing performance. Oklahoma already demonstrated the formula by limiting UTEP to 198 yards and zero points. Michigan can emphasize field position, its running game and defensive pressure while forcing the Miners to string together long drives against a much deeper defense.

The difficulty from a betting perspective is determining how motivated Michigan will be to continue extending the margin once the outcome is decided. The Wolverines should dominate, but enormous favorites can become vulnerable to late backdoor covers when starters leave the game. That makes the number more important than the straight-up outcome.

UTEP vs Michigan Picks and Prediction

Pick: Michigan -35.5 or Better

Take Michigan if the spread is -35.5 or better. UTEP's 51-0 loss at Oklahoma is the most relevant comparison available because the Miners now face another high-level opponent on the road. Michigan should be able to control the line of scrimmage and create favorable field position throughout the afternoon. Once this climbs beyond six touchdowns, however, I'd rather stay away than chase the favorite.

Pick: Under 51.5

Take the Under if the total is set at 51.5 or higher. UTEP failed to score at Oklahoma, and another difficult offensive afternoon is possible in Ann Arbor. Michigan doesn't need to produce 50 points itself to control this matchup. A score around Michigan 42, UTEP 7 covers the target spread while keeping the game below the target total.

Final Picks: Michigan -35.5 or Better and Under 51.5
