Two teams in the AAC will go head-to-head in their first conference game of the season as Temple hosts UTSA on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. EST in Lincoln Financial Field. Check out our UTSA Roadrunners vs Temple Owls pick and prediction here!

UTSA is 2-2 overall, but they are coming in hot with a two-game winning streak. UTSA finished with a 4-4 conference record and a 7-6 record overall last year, so while they're on pace to match that, they will want a better record to consider the season a success. Meanwhile, Temple is 2-2 overall, but they have lost two in a row heading into this contest. Temple was fourth from the bottom in the conference, and they are hoping for better than a 2-6 conference record and an 0-6 record on the road. UTSA is favored by six points while the total is set at an even 58 points. Can Temple defend their home turf with an underdog win?

UTSA Looking for Above Average

UTSA brought itself back up to 2-2 with a win over Colorado State by a score of 17-16. Owen McCown had an average day with 14/27 passes completed for 173 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. Robert Henry Jr. was the MVP of the offense in this game with 144 rushing yards on 21 carries, including a touchdown. He also led the team in receiving with 76 yards on only two receptions with a touchdown. Devin McCuin led the team with four catches. Jimmy Weirick led the defense with five tackles and six tackle assists. Nnanna Anyanwu had three sacks on the day, while nobody else had a sack.

UTSA will have 20 new players arriving through the transfer portal, while 18 players will be departing the program. Among the incoming transfers, Brandon Jacob Jr. and Jaelen Smith are the most highly rated. Jimmori Robinson and Martavius French are going to be the biggest losses for the Roadrunners this season. David Amador II and Camron Cooper are the only players listed on the injury report for the Roadrunners, and both are questionable.

Owen McCown is the leader on offense for the Roadrunners with a 62.3% completion percentage, seven touchdowns, two interceptions, and 756 yards. Henry Jr. is by far the leading running back with 624 yards, seven touchdowns, and 68 carries. Among the receivers, Devin McCuin has the most receptions and yards with 22 and 21,7, respectively. He is tied with AJ Wilson and Henry Jr. with two TD receptions each. Shad Banks Jr. is the leading tackler with 32 total and 19 solo tackles. Anyanwu climbed up to lead the team with three sacks on the year, all from the last game. Jakevian Rodgers has the most passes defended with three and Banks Jr. has a team-high two interceptions.

Temple Looking to Take Back Control

Temple fell to their second-ranked opponent in back-to-back weeks, this time losing to Georgia Tech by a score of 45-24. Evan Simon went 13/32 for 127 yards and a touchdown while Gevani McCoy went 4/5 for 17 yards and a touchdown. Jay Ducker had 76 yards on 14 carries and a touchdown to lead the ground game while Simon also had 14 carries for 68 yards. Jojo Bermudez was the leading receiver with 58 yards on four catches, including a touchdown. Jaylen Castleberry had four tackles with one tackle assist while Sekou Kromah and Cam'Ron Stewart each had a sack on the day.

The Owls are bringing in 25 new faces to their program, while 21 players have decided to leave the university. Among the top players going out, Melvin Siani, Tra Thomas, and Jamel Johnson are ranked as the top players. However, Temple brought in players such as Dontae Pollard, Gevani McCoy, and Demerick Morris to help mitigate the losses. Temple is hoping these moves can elevate them to a better place than last season. Joquez Smith and Jake Woods are the only players listed on the injury report for Temple, and both are questionable for Saturday's matchup.

Simon is leading the offense with a 57.6% completion percentage for 624 yards, ten touchdowns and no interceptions. Ducker is the primary rusher with 315 yards on 50 carries and he is also leading the team with two rushing touchdowns. Jojo Bermudez is the only receiver with over ten catches on the year, and he has 15 to go with 184 yards. Peter Clarke is close behind with 147 yards and he is tied with Bermudez with two touchdowns. Among the defensive players, Avery Powell has a team-high 22 total tackles and Cam'Ron Stewart has the most sacks with four. Ben Osueke has the most passes defended with four, while Ty Davis, Osueke, and Adrian Laing each have an interception on the year.

UTSA vs Temple Pick

Spread Pick for UTSA vs Temple

  • Temple +6 (4 units)

Temple has covered the spread in four of their last five games despite going 2-3 straight up. I trust them to stay within one score at home here, as they are much better at home compared to their record on the road. As long as Temple can be effective on the ground, they should be able to control the tempo of the game. A slower game favors Temple, as they will have a greater chance to cover the spread. UTSA has failed to cover in two of their last three games and they have lost three of their last four overall on the road. With a lot at stake here, as it is a conference game, I expect this to be a bit closer than expected.

Over/Under pick for UTSA vs Temple

  • Over 58 (4 units)

Temple makes this confusing, as they scored 42 and 55 points in the first two games before scoring a combined 27 points in their next two games. UTSA had a rather low-scoring 17-16 finish last week, but I consider that more of an outlier than anything else. Before that, they scored an average of 36 points across their last three games. UTSA is 8-2 on the over in their last ten and these two teams have hit the over in their last two meetings.
