Hokies’ Two-Game Win Streak Snapped
This will be the seventh consecutive week that the Virginia Tech Hokies are in action, and once they wrap up with Georgia Tech on Saturday, they’ll head to a bye week. There has been some early-season turmoil in Blacksburg, with Coach Brent Pry getting fired after Week 3. Coach Philip Montgomery, formerly the offensive coordinator, has taken the reins of the program. After an 0-3 start under Coach Pry, Virginia Tech is 2-1 with wins over Wofford (38-6) and NC State (23-21), and a loss to Wake Forest (30-23), most recently. The Hokies are 2-4 SU, 1-5 ATS, and 3-3 to the over/under.
In terms of personnel, it’s QB Kyron Drones leading the way under center this season. He has thrown for 1,216 yards on a 60.4% completion rate, adding nine touchdowns and four interceptions. WRs Donavon Greene (274 yards, 2 TD) and Ayden Greene (259 yards, 1 TD) have emerged as the top targets out wide. RB Terion Stewart is the leading rusher with 301 yards on 35 carries (8.6 YPC).
- Offensively, the Hokies are scoring 20.6 points per game (98th), while averaging 337.2 yards per week (95th).
- Defensively, they are 108th in the country this year, conceding 32.8 points per game. They’re allowing 398.2 yards per contest, which is 82nd.
#13 Yellow Jackets Remain Perfect at 5-0
As for Coach Brent Key and his Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, they’re starting to find their identity and mesh as a football program. The Jackets are 5-0 this season, notching notable wins over Colorado (27-20), #12 Clemson (24-21), and Wake Forest (30-29), most recently. Following the come-from-behind victory against Wake, Tech went on a bye week. They’re 2-0 in conference play and sitting at +500 to win the ACC title. From a game-by-game betting perspective, the Yellow Jackets are 3-2 ATS and 3-2 to the over.

It’s QB Haynes King leading the offense in Atlanta this season. The signal caller has thrown for 758 yards on a 68.5% completion rate, adding three touchdowns and a pick. He’s also the team’s leading rusher with 380 yards and seven touchdowns on 73 carries (5.2 YPC). Jamal Haynes isn’t far behind King in the rushing game, registering 311 yards and three touchdowns on 59 totes (5.3 YPC). WR Isiah Canion is the top receiver with 237 yards and two touchdowns.
- Georgia Tech’s offense has been solid this season, ranking 41st in scoring (31.5 PPG), while putting up 425.0 yards per game (32nd).
- On the defensive side, the Yellow Jackets are 51st this season, allowing 23.5 points per game. In terms of yardage, they’re 57th, conceding 364.3 yards per contest.
Virginia Tech vs. Georgia Tech Pick
Spread Pick for Virginia Tech vs. Georgia Tech
- Virginia Tech Hokies +14.5 (-115) (5 units)
I like Georgia Tech this season, and with the way the ACC is shaping up, there’s a pretty good chance that they make a push to the ACC title game later this year. However, from a sports betting perspective, I really have no interest in laying big numbers with them. In three attempts, the Yellow Jackets haven’t beaten a Power Four opponent by more than seven points, so there’s no way that I’m laying this type of spread with them. Turnovers have been an issue, as Tech is -0.8 in turnover margin per game (106th).
On the flip side, I am pretty much throwing away those three opening losses for Virginia Tech, since they were under control of former coach Brent Pry. The team is 2-1 under new management, and their offense has scored at least 23 points in each of those games. I’m going to take a flier on the Hokies getting 2+ touchdowns on Saturday.
Over/Under Pick for Virginia Tech vs. Georgia Tech
- Under 55.5 (-108) (5 units)
This is a pretty lofty total, so I’m jumping on the under. Virginia Tech doesn’t play very quickly, averaging only one play every 25.9 seconds (56th). Georgia Tech, which is a run-heavy team, averages a play every 26.1 seconds (63rd). As I mentioned, the Jackets prefer to run, and they’re currently 23rd in rushing play percentage (58.6%) this season. This clock is going to be churning, and the possessions are going to be minimized. The under is 12-4 in the last 16 meetings between the schools, and that’s a trend that I anticipate continuing this weekend. Give me the under.
