Virginia Tech vs Maryland Picks and Prediction for Saturday September 19 2026

By: Kim Smith Published 09/13/2026, 11:30 PM ET

The Virginia Tech Hokies travel to SECU Stadium in College Park, Maryland, to face the Maryland Terrapins on Saturday, September 19, 2026. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM ET. Both teams enter at 2-0, making this one of the more intriguing ACC-Big Ten nonconference matchups of Week 3. Virginia Tech followed its 73-3 demolition of VMI with a 44-21 victory over Old Dominion, while Maryland is coming off an impressive 38-14 road victory over UConn. Maryland is currently around a 1.5-point home favorite with the total set at 51.5. Be sure to check out our free college football picks for more NCAAF predictions throughout the season.

Virginia Tech Has Been Explosive Through Two Games

Virginia Tech has opened the season by scoring 117 points through two games. The Hokies destroyed VMI 73-3 in their opener before stepping up against FBS competition and beating Old Dominion 44-21. That second performance was important because it demonstrated that the Week 1 offensive explosion wasn't entirely the product of playing an overmatched FCS opponent.

The Hokies have also shown an ability to create separation rather than simply surviving games. Virginia Tech scored enough against Old Dominion to keep the Monarchs chasing throughout the second half, while the defense prevented the matchup from developing into a true shootout. That balance makes the Hokies dangerous as they leave Blacksburg for the first time.

The road environment is the biggest new variable. Virginia Tech's first two games came at Lane Stadium, and Maryland has also looked impressive through two weeks. Still, getting points with a 2-0 team that has averaged 58.5 points is attractive. Virginia Tech doesn't need another 40-point performance to cash; the Hokies simply need to prove their offense travels.

Maryland Has Been Equally Impressive

Maryland is also 2-0 and produced one of the more impressive road performances of Week 2. The Terrapins traveled to UConn and won 38-14, controlling a Huskies team that had scored 56 points in its opener. Maryland therefore returns to College Park with substantial momentum.

The defensive performance stands out. UConn had looked explosive one week earlier, yet Maryland held the Huskies to only 14 points and steadily created separation. That suggests Virginia Tech won't simply be able to reproduce the scoring numbers it generated against VMI and Old Dominion without encountering much greater resistance.

Home field explains why Maryland deserves to be a slight favorite, but the margin between these teams looks extremely small. Both are undefeated, both have demonstrated significant offensive capability, and neither has shown a major weakness through two weeks. In that kind of matchup, taking points rather than laying them becomes the more appealing position.

Virginia Tech vs Maryland Picks and Prediction

Pick: Virginia Tech +1.5

Take Virginia Tech +1.5. Maryland's 38-14 win at UConn was impressive, but Virginia Tech has been even more explosive offensively and has now scored 117 points through two games. This matchup looks close enough that I don't want to lay points with either side. I'll take the underdog and give Virginia Tech a legitimate chance to win outright.

Pick: Over 51.5

Take the Over 51.5. Maryland has scored efficiently through its first two games, while Virginia Tech is averaging 58.5 points. Both defenses deserve respect, but the total doesn't require anything close to the offensive explosions Virginia Tech has already produced. A projected Virginia Tech 30, Maryland 27 gives the Hokies the outright victory while pushing the matchup Over.

Final Picks: Virginia Tech +1.5 and Over 51.5
