Wagner vs California Picks and Prediction for Saturday September 19 2026

By: Kim Smith Published 09/13/2026, 04:06 PM ET

The Wagner Seahawks travel across the country to California Memorial Stadium in Berkeley, California, to face the California Golden Bears on Saturday, September 19, 2026. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 PM ET with coverage on ACC Network. Cal enters at 1-1 after earning its first victory of the season with a 21-18 road win over Syracuse, while Wagner makes another demanding road trip after visiting James Madison. This will be the first meeting between Wagner and California. At the time of this writing the odds were not released. Wagner Faces a Difficult Cross-Country Assignment

Wagner's September schedule has offered very little relief. The Seahawks traveled to face James Madison before immediately preparing for a cross-country trip to Berkeley. Facing consecutive FBS opponents on the road places enormous demands on an FCS roster, particularly when the second game involves traveling from Staten Island all the way to Northern California.

The biggest challenge is preventing Cal's defense from dictating the game. The Golden Bears just created three interceptions in their victory at Syracuse, and Wagner cannot afford to give Cal additional possessions through turnovers. The Seahawks need to play conservatively when necessary, protect field position and make the Bears sustain long drives.

Wagner's best chance of staying within a large spread is keeping the score manageable during the first half. If the Seahawks can avoid turnovers and prevent explosive plays, Cal may be content to gradually establish control rather than aggressively chase points. But if Wagner starts handing the Bears short fields, the difference in roster depth could produce a runaway.

California Returns Home With Defensive Momentum

Cal desperately needed its 21-18 victory at Syracuse after opening the season with a 45-24 home loss to UCLA. The Golden Bears responded by going across the country themselves and earning an ACC road victory, improving to 1-1 and giving their new coaching staff its first win.

Defense was the story. Cal intercepted Syracuse three times, including a late takeaway that helped secure the victory. The Bears weren't dominant offensively, but they didn't need to be because their defense consistently prevented Syracuse from turning its yardage into enough points. That formula should translate extremely well against Wagner.

Cal now returns to Berkeley before another important home game against Clemson. That creates some look-ahead risk, but the Bears should still have overwhelming advantages against Wagner. The question isn't whether California wins; it's whether its offense creates enough margin to cover a massive spread. After scoring only 21 at Syracuse, I'm reluctant to lay an excessive number.

Wagner vs California Picks and Prediction

Pick: Wagner +31.5 or Better

Take Wagner if the Seahawks are getting +31.5 or better. Cal should control this matchup, but the Bears have scored 24 and 21 points in their first two games. Asking an offense with that early profile to cover more than four touchdowns requires a level of scoring it hasn't yet demonstrated. Wagner's travel situation is difficult, but the number provides considerable protection.

Pick: Under 52.5

Take the Under if the total is set at 52.5 or higher. This is my stronger position. Cal's defense just forced three interceptions and held Syracuse to 18 points, while the Bears themselves scored only 21. Against Wagner, California should control the game defensively without needing a huge offensive output. A projected California 34, Wagner 7 keeps both selections comfortably alive.

Final Picks: Wagner +31.5 or Better and Under 52.5
