Duke Determined to Stay Above the Demon Deacons
Duke took down UNC in their most recent contest, winning by a score of 32-25. Darian Mensah went 20/23 passing for 175 yards and a touchdown. Nate Sheppard led the ground game with 90 yards rushing, but Anderson Castle had all three rushing touchdowns on the day. Jeremiah Hasley had the most productive day among receivers with seven catches for 85 yards and a touchdown. Luke Mergott led the defense with six tackles and one tackle assist, and he was one of three players with a sack on the day.
The transfer portal was relatively quiet for Duke, with nine new players coming in and 14 players leaving the program. Darian Mensah is the biggest transfer to enter Duke football, while Cooper Barakte, Andrel Anthony, and Caleb Weaver are also big names to come in. Maalik Murphy was the biggest name to leave Duke, while Star Thomas and James Pogorelc also left. Duke did a solid job replacing the key players that they lost and with a 2-2 record, they will want to earn a win to put themselves above .500.
Mensah is the primary QB for the Blue Devils with a 67.4% completion percentage for 3,182 yards, 26 touchdowns, and four interceptions. Sheppard has the most yards rushing with 790, but Castle has a team-high nine rushing touchdowns. Cooper Barkate has the most receiving yards and receptions with 895 and 55, respectively. He has also caught the most TD passes, passing Sahmire Hagans with six. Caleb Weaver has the most total tackles on the team with 73 while DaShawn Stone has a team-high 37 solo tackles. Vincent Anthony Jr. is far and away the leading pass rusher with 6.5 sacks and Chandler Rivers has seven passes defended to lead the squad. Three different players have two interceptions on the season, but none have three or more. Twelve players are on the injured list, but not many are notable or as much as of an impact as the leaders on offense and defense. All but one player on the list is considered questionable.
Wake Forest vs Duke Pick
Spread Pick for Wake Forest vs Duke
- Duke -1 (4 units)
Mensah has been quite consistent thus far this season while limiting mistakes. Wake Forest has scored an average of 16 points per game across their last four games and considering Duke has put up 32+ points in four of their last six games, the Blue Devils should be able to do enough on offense to get a home win. Duke has won their last three meetings in a row, and they has done well enough in conference play for me to side with them.
Over/Under pick for Wake Forest vs Duke
- Under 54.5 (4 units)
I'm not sure I can trust Wake Forest's offensive capabilities right now for me to take the over here. Three of the last four meetings have fallen short of 54 points total and with the way that Duke emphasizes their ground game, I expect them to take enough time off the clock through the run to keep the total low. Wake Forest has additionally given up 14 points or less in four of their last five games. Considering they are coming to Duke with momentum and desire, it might be a more defensive and tougher game than expected, leading to a lower score.
