Washington vs. Washington State prediction

The Apple Cup will kick off early this season, and we'll preview the lines and odds in our Washington vs. Washington State prediction. The Huskies are 2-0 this season with wins over Colorado State and UC Davis, while the Cougars are down to 2-1 after suffering a 10-59 loss at North Texas last week. Kickoff is set for 7:30 PM ET on Saturday, September 20.

Will Huskies' dominance translate to higher competition?

The Washington Huskies are 2-0 heading into Week 4 of the college football season, with a 38-21 win over Colorado State and a 70-10 win over UC Davis. The Huskies can only play their schedule, but questions remain about whether the Huskies' performance is about them or the competition they've faced. Colorado State is 1-1 this season after winning 21-17 against Northern Colorado in a game they were favored to win by 35. The win over UC Davis, impressive as it was, is still a win over an FCS opponent that Washington was already favored to win by four touchdowns.

To the Huskies' credit, they did everything they could to put the UC Davis Aggies away with prejudice. They gained 628 yards on offense while allowing only 218, amassed 34 first downs, converted on 11 of 13 third-down attempts, and successfully went for it and moved the sticks on both of their fourth downs. Senior back Jonah Coleman opened the game with rushing touchdowns on each of the Huskies' first two drives, finishing the day with 111 yards and five touchdowns on only 15 carries. He headlines an offense that's now averaging 303.5 rushing yards through two games, the fourth-highest mark in the FBS.

We'll learn a lot about this Huskies team when they host No. 1 Ohio State in a couple of weeks to open Big Ten conference play. In the meantime, we'll find out whether they can cover a 20-point spread on the road against their longtime cross-state rival.

How will Cougs follow disappointing road loss?

The Washington State Cougars enter Week 4 with more questions than answers about what they are. The team is 2-1, but they're coming off a trip to Denton that started with them as a seven-point underdog to North Texas and ended with them on the wrong side of a 59-10 rout. Neither of the team's wins ended close to the spread, either – they were favored by 17 ahead of their 13-10 win over Idaho to open the season, and blew past the two-point spread in their 36-13 victory over San Diego State in Week 2. Heading into a game as a 20-point underdog against their longtime rival, Washington, which themselves have put together a nebulous resume through three weeks, what, if anything, should we expect from Washington State in the Apple Cup?

The Cougars' loss to the North Texas Mean Green went awry quickly – they gave up a touchdown to North Texas on the opening possession, sophomore quarterback Jaxon Potter threw an interception to end the Cougs' first drive, and the Mean Green ran the pick back 60 yards before scoring a 12-yard touchdown on their next play from scrimmage. After turning the ball over on two of their next three possessions, the Mean Green scored four touchdowns in the second quarter across four drives that lasted only a combined 12 plays. Washington State turned the ball over twice more in response, and the Cougs were down 3-42 with more turnovers than points on the board as the first half ended. Their lone touchdown didn't come until backups were in on the second-to-last drive of the fourth quarter.

With that game looming in the rearview mirror, expectations for Washington State heading into this game aren't particularly high. We'll see if that game was truly representative of what the Cougars are this season.

Washington vs Washington State Pick

Spread Pick for Washington vs Washington State

  • Washington State +19.5 (-110) (4 Units)

The Huskies have dominated the Apple Cup in recent memory, with a total record of 8-2 against the Cougars in their last ten games, but Washington State has covered the spread in three of their last four meetings. The 19.5-point spread here is the longest the Huskies have been asked to cover against the Cougs in over a decade. Of the four meetings these teams have had in Pullman since 2014, only one ended with the Huskies winning by 20 or more. I'd take State to at least do enough to keep this one interesting after the road embarrassment they suffered a week ago.

Over/Under Pick for Washington vs Washington State

  • Over 52.5 (-110) (4 Units)

The Team Total Over is 5-0 in the Huskies' last five games and 2-0 in their games this season. Washington State has been all over the map this season – they should score more in this game than they did against North Texas, but they're still going from a game where they gave up 59 points into a meeting with an opponent that scored 70 in their last outing. I wouldn't want to take the under here.
