Beavers seek elusive first win
The 2025 season has been a little short of a disaster for Oregon State (1-7). The Beavers lost all of their first seven games, the most recent of which was a 45-13 reverse at the hands of Wake Forest, which prompted the school to fire head coach Trent Bray midway into his second season in charge. His replacement, interim appointment Robb Akey, at least enjoyed a soft landing into the position, as he took the reins just before a meeting with FCS Lafayette, which ended 45-13 in Oregon State's favor and clinched its first win of the year.
Saturday's meeting with Washington State, which the Beavers beat last year to win the stripped-down Pac-12, will be rather more challenging. Oregon State will need more from an offense that ranks among the least effective in D-I ball this year, with a pathetic average of 4.8 yards per play.
Quarterback Maalik Murphy is averaging 215.3 yards per game through the air with nine touchdowns and eight interceptions, a number that ties him for seventh among FBS QBs in 2025. On the ground, Murphy has negative rushing yards for the year (-39) on 21 carries, symptomatic of an Oregon State running game that hasn't clicked at all. The Beavers average 3.2 yards per carry, ranking 123rd in college football, with just 100 yards per game gained via the rush.

Cougars on upward trend
It is hard to get a read on Washington State (4-4) in this current season. On the one hand, the Cougars took nationally ranked Ole Miss and Virginia to the wire on consecutive weekends on the road, losing 24-21 and 22-20, respectively, before bouncing back last weekend to take down Toledo 28-7.
But Washington State also has an extremely ugly 49-point loss - its worst reverse for 17 years - on its record in 2025, while it put up little opposition in going down 59-24 at home to rivals Washington. The program will likely need two wins from its last four games, two of which are against Oregon State, to ensure its presence in a bowl game this winter, though a 7-5 finish would give its resume added shine.
All-action quarterback Zevi Eckhaus will be one of the keys to clinching a bowl game. Eckhaus was sharp through the air and on the ground last week to take down Toledo, having given a good account of himself in both of the previous losses against elite opposition. He participated in three of Washington State's four scores, picking up two passing TDs after opening the scoring with a seven-yard run. Eckhaus ran for a game-high 74 yards and threw for 159 yards, though he did give up two picks to the Toledo backfield. He averages 183.3 passing yards per game in eight starts in 2025 while also rushing for 28 yards/game and four TDs.
There is some good news for Washington State going into Saturday's game in the shape of DE Isaac Terrell. The Cougars' tackles for loss and sacks leader is expected to play after missing out against Toledo with an undisclosed injury. Fellow DE Raam Williamson (lower body) resumed practice, having missed the last two games.
Washington State vs. Oregon State pick
Spread Pick for Washington State vs. Oregon State
- Washington State -3.5 (5 units)
We will have to see what kind of bounce Oregon State gets in its first real test after firing Bray. It likely won't be enough against a Washington State team on a high after three strong results. The Cougars are 4-0 ATS in their last four and 5-3 overall this year, going 2-1 ATS as a favorite. The Beavers just haven't been able to finish off drives: their red zone scoring rate of 65.2% ranks 134th among D-I teams, while they have kicked just 33.3% of their field goal attempts. That weakness under the posts will hurt them going up against a formidable defense on Saturday. Oregon State is 1-6 ATS this year playing against FBS opposition.
Take the Cougars.
Over/Under Pick for Washington State vs. Oregon State
- Under 47.5 (5 units)
The Cougars held both Ole Miss and Virginia to respectable scorelines and allowed just 10 points combined in their wins over Colorado State and Toledo. I am backing them to suffocate this weak, pass-heavy Oregon State offense and for the total to stay on the under. The Beavers rank 120th in NCAAF with an average of 17.7 ppg against FBS opponents. Washington State is 3-5 on the over this season and 0-4 in its last four games.
Take the under.
