Even with a perfect record and at home, Maryland is the underdog in this conference clash at +6.5 with a total of 53.5.

Not Quite the Same Offense for Washington

After averaging 55.7 ppg in winning three in a row, the Washington offense was shut down by No. 1 Ohio State in a 24-6 home loss in their first Big 10 contest. They were outgained 357 yards to 234 yards and were only 1-11 on third down. Demond Williams Jr. was 18/22 for 173 yards with no TD and no picks, Jonah Coleman rushed for 71 yards, and Dezmen Roebuck led the way with 58 yards. Williams Jr. was sacked six times, while coach Jedd Fisch picked up two of the team's six penalties.

The Huskies failed to cover as a 9.5-point underdog and they had covered the spread in their previous two games.

Β

Defense Does it Again for Maryland

Maryland ranks seventh in the nation in scoring defense, only giving up an average of 10.8 ppg and their D was solid in their last game in a 27-10 road win over Wisconsin two weeks ago.Β  That was their first test of the season after playing Northern Illinois, FAU and FCS Towson at home. The Terrapins outgained the Badgers 326 yards to 296 yards, held them to 3-17 on third down, and forced the only turnover. Freshman quarterback Malik Washington passed for 265 yards with two TD, DeJuan Williams rushed for 62 yards, and Octavian Smith Jr. and Shaleak Knotts combined for 193 receiving yards.

Maryland covered as a 10-point underdog after failing to cover the spread in their previous two games.

Β

  • The Terps are a pass-first team, as they rank 37th in the nation in passing yards per game but only 123rd in rushing yards per game.
  • Washington (1,038 yards 8 TD 1 INT) is a freshman and has passed for at least 254 yards in each of the four games and has only been sacked once all season.
  • Williams (183 yards 1 TD) is the leading rusher but is only averaging 3.9 yards per carry.
  • Knotts (276 yards 5 TD) is the leading receiver and is averaging 19.7 yards per reception.
  • Maryland will be up against Washington and their 63rd-ranked pass defense and 13th-ranked rushing defense.
  • Maryland went into their bye last week with 16 sacks and eight interceptions to lead the nation.
  • On the season, Maryland is 3-0 at home.

Washington vs. Maryland Pick

Spread Pick for Washington vs. Maryland

  • Maryland +6.5 (+4 Units)

Maryland is undefeated and while not playing the best schedule, they are coming off a bye. This is a big game for the Terps, who were expected to finish in the bottom of the Big 10.. Washington was beaten badly in their last game, only scoring six points to top-ranked Ohio State, but their defense was not that bad. They have a more balanced offense and have played a tougher schedule. One key in this game is the Maryland pass rush, as they rank second in the nation in sacks per game and face a Washington offensive line that has given up nine sacks in the last two games. Regarding the Washington vs. Maryland prediction the Terps will put up a fight at home, and while they may not win, they will keep it close and cover the spread.

Β

Over/Under Pick for Washington vs. Maryland

  • Over 53.5Β

While both teams went Under in their last game, I am leaning towards the Over in this game. Washington was killing it on offense before only scoring six points in their last game but they were facing top-ranked Ohio State. Maryland is decent on the offensive side of the ball led by young quarterback Malik Washington, likely facing his toughest test, but he is at home.Β  The Huskies have the more balanced offense and will put up a decent total, but so will the Terrapins with their solid passing attack. Don’t look for a barnburner here, but it will not be a low-scoring affair either, which is why the Over is the pick.
