West Georgia Offense Searching for Answers
West Georgia's season has started with consecutive losses, as the Wolves followed a 24-10 home defeat against Chattanooga with a 47-0 loss at Kennesaw State. The offensive numbers through those two games provide a major concern heading into the program's first matchup with Arkansas State.
The Wolves managed only 160 total yards against Kennesaw State, including 49 rushing yards. Collin Hurst completed 16 of 27 passes for 93 yards, while Luke Marble led the ground game with just 21 yards. West Georgia finished with seven first downs and went 0-for-12 on third down as Kennesaw State controlled the game from beginning to end.
Those struggles weren't isolated to one bad night. West Georgia generated only 219 yards against Chattanooga and rushed for 38 yards in that opener. The Wolves have therefore produced just 87 rushing yards through their first two games. Establishing something on the ground becomes essential in Jonesboro because another one-dimensional offensive performance would allow Arkansas State to attack Hurst in obvious passing situations.
Arkansas State Has Offensive Upside Despite Opening Loss
Arkansas State couldn't keep pace with Memphis throughout its opener, but there were encouraging offensive signs in the 42-24 defeat. The Red Wolves held multiple leads during the first half before Memphis took control after the break.
Trey Owens completed 21 of 30 passes for 325 yards and a touchdown. Hunter Summers caught five passes for 98 yards, while Kenyon Clay contributed both as a receiver and runner. Clay caught a 75-yard touchdown pass and also led the Red Wolves with 50 rushing yards and a touchdown.
Arkansas State's ability to create explosive plays through the passing game should be especially important here. Kennesaw State just generated 508 yards against West Georgia while scoring 40 points before halftime. The Owls also rushed for 297 yards and collected 31 first downs.
The Red Wolves need to improve defensively after surrendering 42 points to Memphis, but West Georgia presents a dramatically different challenge. Arkansas State should be able to control field position and give its offense repeated opportunities to build a substantial lead in its home opener.
West Georgia vs Arkansas St. Picks and Prediction
Pick: Arkansas State -24.5 or Better
With no dependable conventional sportsbook line available yet, Arkansas State -24.5 or better is my target. West Georgia has scored only 10 points through two games while producing 219 and 160 total yards. The Wolves were just outgained 508-160 by Kennesaw State and failed to convert any of their 12 third downs. Arkansas State's defense should find this assignment considerably easier than Memphis, while Owens and the passing attack have already demonstrated the ability to generate explosive plays. If the opening spread stays below four touchdowns, I'll back Arkansas State -24.5 or better.
Pick: Under 52.5
The Under 52.5 is my preferred total target. Arkansas State has the offensive advantage necessary to score into the 30s or potentially the low 40s, but West Georgia's contribution is the concern for Over bettors. The Wolves scored 10 against Chattanooga and zero against Kennesaw State while averaging fewer than 190 yards through their first two games. Arkansas State could dominate without this becoming a high-scoring game. Something around 38-7 or 41-7 fits the matchup. Take the Under if the total is set at 52.5 or higher.
Final Picks: Arkansas State -24.5 or better and Under 52.5 or higher
