The Western Carolina Catamounts travel to Historic Nippert Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio, to face the Cincinnati Bearcats on Saturday, September 12. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM ET on ESPN+. Western Carolina enters at 1-1 following a 28-19 loss at Campbell, while Cincinnati is 1-0 after defeating Boston College 34-15 in its season opener. Western Carolina Has Major Questions Up Front

Western Carolina enters this matchup on a short week after its game at Campbell was postponed from Saturday to Sunday because of severe weather and an electrical problem at the stadium. The Catamounts eventually suffered a 28-19 loss, dropping to 1-1 before traveling to Cincinnati.

The final statistics exposed a major weakness. Western Carolina finished with 327 total yards, but an incredible 326 came through the air and only one came on the ground. The Catamounts attempted only 18 runs and averaged 0.1 yards per rushing attempt while allowing Campbell to generate 528 total yards.

Lex Thomas completed 25 of 44 passes for 326 yards and two touchdowns without an interception. AJ Colombo led the receiving corps with 91 yards, while Jai Boyd provided a major explosive play with a 48-yard touchdown reception.

Western Carolina did create three interceptions defensively, which helped keep the Catamounts within striking distance after falling behind 28-10 at halftime. However, allowing Campbell 330 passing yards and 198 rushing yards is concerning enough before facing a Big 12 opponent on the road.

Cincinnati Controls Boston College With Its Ground Game

Cincinnati opened the season with a convincing 34-15 victory over Boston College, extending its home-opener winning streak to 25 games. The Bearcats established control on the ground and steadily wore down the Eagles.

JC French IV accounted for four touchdowns in his first Cincinnati start, rushing for three scores and throwing another. Gi'Bran Payne made an immediate impact in his Bearcats debut, rushing 14 times for a career-high 108 yards.

Cincinnati finished with 254 rushing yards on 46 attempts, with five different players producing at least 20 yards on the ground. That depth is particularly important in this matchup because Western Carolina just surrendered 198 rushing yards to Campbell.

The Bearcats should also have opportunities defensively. Western Carolina's inability to generate anything on the ground against Campbell made the offense almost entirely dependent on Thomas. Cincinnati can make life difficult by creating pressure and forcing the Catamounts into obvious passing situations.

Western Carolina vs Cincinnati Picks and Prediction

Pick: Cincinnati -24.5 or Better

With conventional sportsbook odds not yet available, Cincinnati -24.5 or better is my target. Western Carolina is a capable FCS program with enough passing talent to generate some offense, but the matchup at the line of scrimmage heavily favors Cincinnati. The Catamounts just finished with one rushing yard and allowed Campbell to accumulate 528 total yards. Cincinnati, meanwhile, produced 254 rushing yards against Boston College and now faces a substantially weaker defensive front. The Bearcats should gradually wear down Western Carolina and create separation in the second half. Take Cincinnati if the spread opens at -24.5 or better.

Pick: Over 52.5

The Over 52.5 is my preferred total target. Cincinnati should have an excellent opportunity to reach the upper 30s or low 40s against a Western Carolina defense that just surrendered 528 yards. The Catamounts also showed enough passing ability to contribute, with Thomas throwing for 326 yards and two touchdowns against Campbell. Cincinnati could control this game comfortably without completely shutting down Western Carolina's passing attack. Something around 41-17 or 42-17 would clear this target. Take the Over if the total is set at 52.5 or lower.

Final Picks: Cincinnati -24.5 or better and Over 52.5 or lower
