Wisconsin returns home after a difficult opening assignment against Notre Dame at Lambeau Field. The Badgers lost 41-13 after remaining within striking distance during the first half. Wisconsin trailed only 13-10 at halftime before Notre Dame took control over the final two quarters.

Colton Joseph completed 19 of 30 passes for 217 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Wisconsin struggled to establish much consistency on the ground, with Abu Sama III producing 49 rushing yards on 15 attempts. Malachi Coleman supplied one of the brighter offensive performances with four receptions for 76 yards and a touchdown.

The Badgers now receive an enormous reduction in competition for their home opener. After facing one of the country's best teams, Wisconsin draws an FCS opponent that just surrendered 41 points to Illinois State.

This should provide Wisconsin with an opportunity to establish its running game, create easier passing situations and play from ahead rather than chasing the game. The defense also gets a chance to reset after allowing Notre Dame to pull away in the second half.

Notre Dame is obviously a dramatically stronger opponent than Western Illinois, so Wisconsin's offensive numbers should improve considerably, but a 36.5-point spread leaves very little margin if the Badgers settle into a more conservative approach after establishing a large lead. Western Illinois has already demonstrated that it can score against weaker competition, and even 10-14 points from the Leathernecks would force Wisconsin into the upper 40s to cover.
