Western Illinois Faces Its Biggest Test
Western Illinois opened the season in explosive fashion with a 65-14 victory over Northwestern College. The Leathernecks were unable to carry that momentum into their second game, however, suffering a 41-10 home loss to Illinois State.
That result provides a much more relevant measuring stick for Saturday's trip to Madison. Western Illinois struggled to remain competitive against Illinois State, falling behind early and never generating enough offense to seriously threaten a comeback. Now the Leathernecks take another significant step up in competition against a Big Ten opponent.
The challenge becomes particularly significant on the road. Western Illinois played each of its first two games at home and will now make its first trip of the season into one of college football's more difficult environments. The Leathernecks don't necessarily need to remain competitive into the fourth quarter to cover this spread, however. At +36.5, the objective is simply to score enough and avoid the game turning into a five- or six-touchdown runaway.
Wisconsin Looks to Rebound at Camp Randall
Wisconsin returns home after a difficult opening assignment against Notre Dame at Lambeau Field. The Badgers lost 41-13 after remaining within striking distance during the first half. Wisconsin trailed only 13-10 at halftime before Notre Dame took control over the final two quarters.
Colton Joseph completed 19 of 30 passes for 217 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Wisconsin struggled to establish much consistency on the ground, with Abu Sama III producing 49 rushing yards on 15 attempts. Malachi Coleman supplied one of the brighter offensive performances with four receptions for 76 yards and a touchdown.
The Badgers now receive an enormous reduction in competition for their home opener. After facing one of the country's best teams, Wisconsin draws an FCS opponent that just surrendered 41 points to Illinois State.
This should provide Wisconsin with an opportunity to establish its running game, create easier passing situations and play from ahead rather than chasing the game. The defense also gets a chance to reset after allowing Notre Dame to pull away in the second half.
Western Illinois vs Wisconsin Picks and Prediction
Pick: Western Illinois +36.5
Wisconsin should win comfortably, but Western Illinois +36.5 is the preferred side at the current number. The Badgers are being asked to cover more than five touchdowns despite scoring only 13 points in their opener. Notre Dame is obviously a dramatically stronger opponent than Western Illinois, so Wisconsin's offensive numbers should improve considerably, but a 36.5-point spread leaves very little margin if the Badgers settle into a more conservative approach after establishing a large lead. Western Illinois has already demonstrated that it can score against weaker competition, and even 10-14 points from the Leathernecks would force Wisconsin into the upper 40s to cover. A 42-10 or 45-13 Wisconsin victory would be completely convincing while still cashing the underdog ticket. Take Western Illinois +36.5.
Pick: Under 49.5
The Under 49.5 pairs naturally with the large underdog spread. Wisconsin's defense should have a major advantage against an FCS offense that managed only 10 points against Illinois State, while the Badgers haven't yet demonstrated that they should be expected to score into the 40s or 50s themselves. Wisconsin's best path is likely to establish control early, lean on the ground game and shorten the second half once the outcome is secure. That creates several realistic final scores below the number, including 35-7, 38-7 or 38-10. With Western Illinois potentially struggling to reach double digits, take Under 49.5.
Final Picks: Western Illinois +36.5 and Under 49.5
