Western Kentucky Looks to Build on Latest Win

Western Kentucky snapped a two-game losing streak with a 34-13 victory over Missouri State on October 8. Before that result, the Hilltoppers lost 34-13 at New Mexico State and were shut out 38-0 by Indiana. Western Kentucky also suffered a 70-20 defeat against Georgia, although a 52-7 victory over Mercer showed what the offense can accomplish against weaker opposition. The Hilltoppers have averaged 25.3 points through six games, with three performances of at least 34 points.

Quarterback Rodney Tisdale Jr. has completed 66.9% of his passes for 852 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions. Ajay Allen leads the rushing attack with 321 yards and four touchdowns, while Brock Glenn has added 268 rushing yards and five scores. Jonathan Stafford Jr. has caught 36 passes for 332 yards. Western Kentucky has averaged 3.8 yards per rushing attempt, with 1,391 passing yards overall. Defensively, Jaylen Lewis leads the team with 53 tackles, while the Hilltoppers have recorded six sacks and three interceptions.

Injuries: Nigel Johnson, K. Hutchinson, G. Reimer, A. Boyd and Sincere Baines are questionable.

Sam Houston Struggles Against Stronger Opposition

Sam Houston has dropped four of its first five games, including a 35-3 loss to Liberty on October 8. The Bearkats also fell 49-14 against Texas Tech after beating Nicholls 59-0 in their only victory. Earlier defeats against Tulsa and Troy were considerably closer, with Sam Houston losing those contests by six and three points. The Bearkats have averaged 22.8 points per game, but 59 of their 114 points came against Nicholls. Scoring has been inconsistent against FBS opponents.

Quarterback Landyn Locke has thrown for 1,306 yards, 11 touchdowns, and three interceptions while completing 66.3% of his passes. Grady O'Neill leads the receivers with 255 yards, while Chris Reed has contributed 238 yards and three touchdowns. Alton McCaskill has rushed for 201 yards, although Sam Houston has averaged just 3.3 yards per rushing attempt. The Bearkats have recorded 10 sacks and five interceptions defensively. Elijah Groves leads the pass rush with 2.5 sacks, and Dean Ford has registered 26 tackles.

Injuries: Max Whisner is questionable. B. Kuhl is out.

Key to the Game

Western Kentucky has scored nine rushing touchdowns compared to Sam Houston's three, giving the Hilltoppers an advantage near the goal line. However, Locke has thrown 11 touchdown passes, and Sam Houston has averaged 274 passing yards per game. Western Kentucky's defense has allowed at least 34 points in three games, making Locke a significant concern. The Hilltoppers need their rushing attack to produce more than the season average of 3.8 yards per attempt, particularly against a Bearkats defense that has recorded 10 sacks.

Western Kentucky vs Sam Houston Game Pick

  • Western Kentucky -1.5 (-115)

Western Kentucky has the stronger rushing production and arrives after a convincing victory over Missouri State. Allen and Glenn have combined for nine rushing touchdowns, while Sam Houston has managed just three rushing scores through five games. The Bearkats have also lost their last two contests by a combined 67 points, scoring only 17. Locke has produced impressive passing numbers, but Western Kentucky has more options near the goal line. The Hilltoppers take advantage of those differences and cover the narrow spread on Wednesday night in Huntsville.

Western Kentucky vs Sam Houston Over/Under Pick

  • Under 51.5 (-110)

Recent scoring results favor a game below 51.5 points. Western Kentucky managed just 13 points against New Mexico State and failed to score against Indiana, while Sam Houston produced only three points against Liberty. The Bearkats have scored 21 or fewer in three of their five contests, and Western Kentucky has averaged 25.3 points this season. Neither offense has been consistently productive against FBS opponents. With Sam Houston struggling to run the football, the under is the best play for this Conference USA matchup.
