Broncos Looking to Get to .500

The Western Michigan Broncos are still looking to sustain their winning streak as they are coming off a 47-14 home win over the FCS Rhode Island Rams on Saturday. That came after they edged MAC rival Toledo 14-13 on Sept. 20.Β  They are currently 114th in the NCAA with 19.4 points per game scored. Western Michigan’s offense is led by quarterback Broc Lowry, who has been able to complete just 51-of-89 (57.3%) passes for 588 yards with a pair of passing touchdowns and one interception to open the season. However, he has been able to run the football at an amazing level as he has 55 rushing attempts for 227 yards (4.1 yards per carry) and five rushing touchdowns.

Their total offense stands at 277.4 yards per game (131st in NCAA), with rushing attack only able to get 132.8 yards (102nd). The passing game has been unable to get much going either with an average of 144.6 yards per game (128th).

Defensively, the Broncos are giving up 24.2 points per game right now, which is 74th. The team has stepped up as they are allowing 326.2 total yards per game (49th), with their ability to stop the run being something they need to improve upon, allowing 4.0 yards per rushing attempt. There needs to be improvement offensively to win more games.

Minutemen Looking to Get in the Win Column

The UMass Minutemen are looking to get back on track as they are on a four-game losing streak to open the year after coming off a 42-6 road loss against the Missouri Tigers on Saturday. Their offense has been unable to get much of anything going as they are scoring only 12.2 points per game this year, placing them 135th in the NCAA. Quarterback AJ Hairston appears to be the new starting quarterback and has been struggling under center as he has completed 18-of-43 passes for 159 yards with one touchdown pass to one interception. He would be the third starting quarterback the team has used this season. As a team, they are struggling to move the ball as they are ranked 136th nationally in total yards, averaging 225.8 per game. The Minutemen’s passing offense, which averages 163.5 yards per game, proves they are not able to move the ball down the field, as they are 117th in the sport.

The rushing game, contributing 39.8 yards per game (136th nationally), has been unable to move the football on the ground. The UMass defense is currently 132nd in the sport with 39.5 points allowed per game. They are also allowing way too much offense against them, as they are 123rd with 455.5 total yards per game. Their pass defense has been unable to limit big passing plays as the Minutemen are 90th in the NCAA, as they are giving up 11.8 yards per completion. The team is not playing well, but could be in a position to pull off a home upset.

Injury Report for UMass

  • Quarterback Brandon Rose: Undisclosed (Questionable)
  • Safety Zeraun Daniel: Undisclosed (Questionable)
  • Offensive lineman Brock Taylor: Undisclosed (Questionable)
  • Offensive lineman Zachary Franks: Undisclosed (OUT)
  • Defensive lineman Joshua Nobles: Undisclosed (OUT)

Western Michigan Broncos vs. Massachusetts Minutemen Pick

Spread Pick for Western Michigan vs. Massachusetts Minutemen

  • Western Michigan Broncos -13.5 (4 units)

There is a clear difference between the ability to cover the spread this season, as Western Michigan is 4-1 ATS while UMass is just 1-3 ATS. The Minutemen have scored six total touchdowns in their four games so far, so they aren’t able to find the end zone too well. UMass cannot even move the football as they are averaging just 3.9 total yards per play, so the offense cannot score too much. All in all, take the Western Michigan Broncos to cover the spread once again.

Over/Under Pick for Western Michigan vs. Massachusetts

  • Under 47.5 (4 units)

Not to keep saying the same things, but we cannot trust UMass to score enough to reach their implied total. Broc Lowry is not doing too well passing as he has two passing touchdowns and has not thrown for more than 201 yards in a game, so they are basically a one-dimensional offense. These offenses have too many holes and the Minutemen can stack the box to limit the running game. Go with under 47.5 total points to hit here.
