Western Michigan doesn't need to consistently march the length of the field. A couple of sustained scoring drives that produce somewhere around 10 to 14 points could completely change the mathematics of the spread.

The Broncos' primary objective must be avoiding turnovers and short fields. Michigan possesses enough defensive talent to create problems without Western Michigan helping the Wolverines. If the Broncos can protect the football, consume clock and make Michigan repeatedly drive the field, +27.5 or +28 becomes increasingly valuable. Western Michigan can lose decisively and still cash. I'm taking Western Michigan +28 if that number is available, with +27.5 still playable. Michigan should win comfortably and possesses major advantages in overall talent and depth, but asking the Wolverines to create more than four touchdowns of separation against the defending MAC champions is a substantial requirement when the total is only 48.5. Western Michigan doesn't need to threaten an upset. The Broncos need to protect the football, generate a few sustained possessions and find approximately 10 points. Something around Michigan 34, Western Michigan 10 gives the Wolverines a decisive 24-point victory while comfortably cashing the underdog. At exactly +28, a 35-7 result would still produce a push. The Under 48.5 is my preferred total. Michigan's defensive front should have the advantage against Western Michigan, and the Wolverines can control this game without needing an offensive explosion.
