The Western Michigan Broncos travel to Rice Stadium in Houston, Texas, to face the Rice Owls on Saturday, September 19, 2026. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM ET. Western Michigan enters at 1-1 after responding to a heartbreaking 13-12 loss at Michigan with a convincing 49-14 victory over Monmouth. Rice is also 1-1 after opening with a victory over Houston Christian before suffering a 52-0 loss at No. 3 Notre Dame. At the time of this writing the odds were not released. Western Michigan Has Already Proven It Can Compete on the Road

Western Michigan's 1-1 record doesn't fully reflect how well the Broncos have played. They opened the season at Michigan as a massive underdog and came within seconds of producing one of the biggest upsets in program history. Western Michigan forced three turnovers and held the Wolverines to only 13 points before falling 13-12 in a game that wasn't decided until the final moments.

The Broncos responded exactly as a good team should in Week 2. Instead of allowing the Michigan disappointment to carry over, Western Michigan returned home and defeated Monmouth 49-14. Scoring 49 points was an encouraging development after the Broncos had been forced to settle for four field goals against Michigan. Western Michigan has now shown two completely different paths to remaining competitive: defense against a Big Ten opponent and offensive production against weaker competition.

Saturday provides a useful middle ground. Rice doesn't have Michigan's talent, but playing in Houston presents a more difficult assignment than hosting Monmouth. Western Michigan should nevertheless enter with confidence after its first two performances. If the Broncos can generate anything close to the defensive disruption they created at Michigan while maintaining their improved red-zone efficiency, they have an excellent opportunity to earn their first road victory.

Rice Needs a Major Offensive Response

Rice opened the season positively against Houston Christian, but its trip to Notre Dame provided a dramatically different experience. The Owls were overwhelmed 52-0 and fell to 1-1, with Notre Dame scoring 21 points in both the first and second quarters to establish a 42-0 halftime advantage. Rice never found a way back into the game and was held scoreless for the afternoon.

The Owls also allowed Notre Dame to create immediate momentum. A turnover was returned for a touchdown just seconds into the game, putting Rice behind before its offense had an opportunity to settle into the matchup. Things continued deteriorating from there. While Western Michigan won't present Notre Dame's overall roster strength, the Broncos already forced three turnovers against Michigan, so ball security remains a major concern for Rice.

Returning to Rice Stadium should help significantly. The Owls are stepping down from the No. 3 team in the country to a MAC opponent and should have far more opportunities to establish their offense. Still, Western Michigan's performance at Michigan makes this a difficult matchup to treat as an automatic Rice rebound. The Owls need to prove they can consistently finish drives against an FBS defense before they deserve to be trusted as anything more than a small home favorite.

Western Michigan vs Rice Picks and Prediction

Pick: Western Michigan +3 or Better

Take Western Michigan if the Broncos are getting +3 or better. Western Michigan's 13-12 performance at Michigan remains the most impressive result either team has produced. The Broncos followed it with a 49-14 victory rather than suffering an emotional letdown, while Rice is trying to recover from being shut out 52-0 at Notre Dame. Rice gets home field, but Western Michigan has already demonstrated that it can compete in a much more difficult road environment. If the market gives us a full field goal with the Broncos, I'll take the points and give Western Michigan a legitimate chance to win outright.

Pick: Under 49.5

Take the Under if the total is set at 49.5 or higher. Western Michigan held Michigan to 13 points and should have a substantial defensive advantage compared with what Rice encountered against Notre Dame. The Owls also have to prove their offense can immediately recover after being shut out. Western Michigan's 49-point Week 2 performance adds some risk, but that came against Monmouth rather than an FBS opponent. A projected Western Michigan 24, Rice 20 gives the Broncos the outright victory while keeping the game below the target.

Final Picks: Western Michigan +3 or Better and Under 49.5
