William & Mary Faces a Major Step Up in Competition

William & Mary enters one of the most difficult assignments on its nonconference schedule. The Tribe has traditionally been capable of playing disciplined football against FBS competition, but Duke’s performance through three games suggests this is a considerably more difficult matchup than simply facing an average power-conference opponent.

The biggest challenge will be sustaining drives against a Duke defense that has already produced two dominant performances. The Blue Devils allowed only three points against Tulane and seven against Stanford. William & Mary cannot afford repeated three-and-outs because that would give Duke additional possessions and eventually allow the Blue Devils’ depth advantage to become increasingly important.

For William & Mary, shortening the game is essential. The Tribe needs sustained possessions, success on early downs and a clean turnover margin. If Duke is allowed to play from ahead and force William & Mary into obvious passing situations, the difference between an FCS roster and an ACC roster becomes much more difficult to overcome.

Duke Has Been Impressive on Both Sides of the Ball

Duke is 3-0 and has shown multiple ways to win. The Blue Devils opened with a convincing 17-3 victory over Tulane, went on the road and defeated Illinois 31-27, and then returned home and overwhelmed Stanford 35-7. That gives Duke a 83-37 cumulative scoring advantage through three games.

The Stanford performance was particularly encouraging because Duke never allowed the game to become competitive. The Blue Devils’ defense controlled the matchup while the offense generated enough consistent production to create a 28-point margin. Combined with the road win at Illinois, Duke has already demonstrated that its early success is not dependent entirely on home-field advantage.

The primary concern from a betting perspective is simply how large the spread becomes. Duke clearly deserves to be a substantial favorite, but FBS-versus-FCS numbers can quickly move beyond comfortable territory. The Blue Devils have a significant talent and depth advantage, though, and their defensive performance makes it difficult to envision William & Mary scoring enough to remain competitive if Duke reaches the upper twenties offensively.

William & Mary faces a substantial jump in size, speed and depth. The Blue Devils should gradually create separation, particularly if their defense keeps forcing short possessions. Duke is playable up to roughly three touchdowns.

Pick: Under 52.5 or Higher

The strongest reason for playing the under is Duke’s defense. Tulane scored three points and Stanford scored seven, and William & Mary is unlikely to receive enough possessions to turn this into a shootout if Duke controls the game. The Blue Devils can win comfortably without pushing the combined score deep into the fifties.
