Wyoming vs Colorado State Picks and Prediction for Saturday September 5 2026
Wyoming and Colorado State renew the Border War when the Cowboys travel to Canvas Stadium in Fort Collins, Colorado, on Saturday, September 5, 2026. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 PM ET with USA Network providing national television coverage. This will be the season opener for both programs, and unlike many of the massive mismatches on the opening-week schedule, oddsmakers expect a genuinely competitive game. Colorado State is favored by approximately 3.5 points, while the total is sitting around 47.5. Get into the action with our free college football picks.
This is exactly the type of matchup where the number matters almost as much as which team we believe is better. Colorado State gets home field and deserves to be favored, but laying more than a field goal in a rivalry game with a relatively low total creates risk. Wyoming doesn't need to win the Border War to cash our ticket. The Cowboys simply need to prevent Colorado State from creating more than a field goal of separation.
Wyoming Gets the Valuable Hook
The first thing that jumps out is Wyoming +3.5 rather than +3. That half-point may look insignificant, but it changes one of the most common potential outcomes in a competitive football game. If Colorado State wins 24-21, 20-17 or 27-24, Wyoming bettors still cash.
That's particularly valuable with a total of only 47.5. The market isn't expecting these teams to combine for 60 or 70 points, where increased scoring creates more opportunities for the favorite to separate. Every point becomes more valuable when the expected scoring environment is lower.
Wyoming also doesn't need to play aggressively to justify taking +3.5. The Cowboys' ideal game involves staying within one possession, limiting explosive plays and making Colorado State string together sustained drives. If Wyoming can keep this around a one-score margin entering the fourth quarter, the +3.5 should be in excellent position.
Wyoming Needs to Keep the Game on Its Terms
The Cowboys' biggest challenge will be preventing Colorado State from using the home crowd to create early momentum. This is the Rams' season opener, their Stripe Out game and one of the biggest rivalry games on the schedule. Canvas Stadium should be energized from the opening kickoff.
Wyoming cannot help the Rams with turnovers, poor special teams or short fields. A low-scoring game can quickly turn into something very different when an underdog repeatedly gives the favorite easy scoring opportunities.
The Cowboys instead want Colorado State to work for everything. Long drives consume clock and reduce the total number of possessions. That simultaneously helps Wyoming +3.5 and Under 47.5.
That's one reason the two selections fit together naturally. We're essentially betting that Colorado State doesn't turn home field into an avalanche and that Wyoming can force the Rams into a four-quarter game.
Colorado State Deserves the Home-Favorite Role
Colorado State has several obvious advantages. The Rams don't have to travel, they'll play in front of their own crowd, and this game carries considerable importance as their 2026 opener.
The question isn't whether Colorado State should be favored. It should. The issue is whether the Rams should be laying 3.5 rather than 2.5 or 3.
At -3.5, a field-goal victory is no longer sufficient. Colorado State could play the slightly better game, control more of the possession and ultimately win 24-21, yet Rams bettors would still lose.
That's what makes this spread more interesting than the moneyline. I can believe Colorado State has the better chance of winning outright while simultaneously believing Wyoming +3.5 is the stronger wager.
The Border War Adds Another Layer
Rivalry games aren't automatically close simply because the teams dislike each other, and I wouldn't use the Border War label by itself as justification for taking Wyoming.
It does matter, however, when we're already dealing with a relatively small spread and low total. Wyoming isn't walking into Fort Collins treating this like a routine nonconference road game. This is one of the most meaningful games on the Cowboys' schedule.
Colorado State has exactly the same motivation. That should produce an intense game in which both sides understand the cost of mistakes.
Those circumstances reinforce my preference for taking more than a field goal rather than laying it. There is less room for error with Colorado State -3.5 than there is with Wyoming +3.5.
Why the 47.5 Total Matters
The total is one of the biggest reasons I like the underdog.
A 47.5-point total suggests the market expects something around Colorado State 25, Wyoming 22. That's already close to our ideal handicap.
If scoring remains in that range, creating four or more points of separation becomes considerably harder. Colorado State doesn't have endless possessions to overcome a slow start, turnover or missed scoring opportunity.
Consider a 24-21 Colorado State victory. Wyoming covers and the game produces only 45 combined points. A 23-20 Wyoming upset gives us the same result on both wagers. Even Colorado State 24-20 would cash both.
The relationship between the spread and total therefore gives us several plausible final-score combinations where both wagers win.
Under 47.5 Doesn't Require a Defensive Slugfest
We don't need a 17-13 final to cash Under 47.5.
A game can reach the low 20s for both teams and still remain Under. Colorado State 24-21 produces 45. Wyoming 23-20 produces 43. Colorado State 24-20 produces 44.
That gives us some room for both offenses to have success without destroying the wager.
The primary danger would be turnovers or special-teams plays generating easy touchdowns. A pick-six or short field can add seven points without requiring either offense to sustain a drive, which is particularly damaging when playing an Under in the 40s.
Assuming neither side repeatedly gives away field position, I expect possessions to be valuable and points difficult enough to keep this beneath the number.
The Difference Between +3 and +3.5 Is Critical
This is one of the games where I would actively shop sportsbooks rather than treating every Wyoming number as equivalent.
Wyoming +3.5 is a bet I like. Wyoming +3 is noticeably weaker.
The reason is simple. A three-point Colorado State victory is one of the most logical outcomes in a game with this spread and total. At +3, we merely push. At +3.5, we cash.
I wouldn't voluntarily surrender that half-point unless there were a substantial difference in price. The hook is part of the handicap rather than a minor bonus.
The same applies if the market moves the other direction. If Wyoming reaches +4, the Cowboys become even more attractive because a four-point Colorado State victory would push rather than beat us.
Wyoming vs Colorado State Picks and Prediction
Pick: Wyoming +3.5
Wyoming +3.5 is my preferred side. Colorado State deserves to be favored at Canvas Stadium, but there is a major difference between asking the Rams to win and requiring them to win by at least four points. The low 47.5 total increases the value of every point we're receiving, while the Border War setting gives Wyoming every reason to treat this as one of its most important games of the season. Colorado State can control stretches of the game and win 24-21 while our ticket still cashes. Take Wyoming +3.5, and protect that hook rather than casually settling for +3.
Pick: Under 47.5
I'm also taking Under 47.5, and I like how it correlates with the Wyoming spread. A lower-scoring game reduces Colorado State's opportunities to create separation and makes the +3.5 increasingly valuable. We don't need a completely stagnant offensive performance either. Scores such as 24-21, 23-20 and 24-20 all stay beneath 47.5 while keeping Wyoming inside the spread. Unless turnovers or special teams create cheap points, I expect the Border War to remain competitive and relatively controlled. Take Under 47.5.
Final Picks: Wyoming +3.5 and Under 47.5
