Marquez Makes 24th Start
German Marquez will take the mound in the final game of this divisional series with the Padres.
- He allowed five runs on six hits and a walk while striking out two over five innings to take the loss last Tuesday versus the Dodgers. Marquez allowed scoring plays in each of the second through fifth innings.
- He allowed the opening run on a wild pitch and allowed two home runs for the third time in his last eight appearances. Mookie Betts and Teoscar Hernandez took him deep in the contest.
- Marquez has not looked comfortable since returning from right biceps tendinitis, allowing 17 runs over 14.1 innings across three starts since coming back from the injured list. Through 23 innings, he has a 6.31 ERA, 1.70 WHIP, and 77:42 K:BB across 112.2 innings this season.
Colorado defeated the Padres 4-2 on Friday night. They scored for the first time in five games in San Diego this season. Entering play Saturday, Colorado has the worst record in the majors at 41-107, and was outscored 16-0 in a three-game sweep in April before finally coming up with a win against San Diego.

Darvish Will Toe the Rubber
The Padres will start veteran right-hander Yu Darvish in the final game of this home series with the Rockies.
- He did not factor into the decision in a start last Monday, allowing three runs on six hits and no walks over 5.2 innings against the Reds. He struck out seven.
- Darvish gave up homers to TJ Friedl and Austin Hays, but he was otherwise solid in matching his season-high for strikeouts. Also, the Friedl homer was just a 343-footer and barely rated as a hard-hit ball. Darvish settled in to gut out 5.2 good innings, keeping the Padres in a game they ultimately won in 10 innings.
- It has been a challenging season for the veteran right-hander, who did not debut until July 7 due to an elbow injury. Through 12 starts, he owns a 5.65 ERA and 1.17 WHIP across 57.1 innings as San Diego hopes he can find his form heading into the postseason.
The Padres entered Friday night 2 1/2 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West and four games ahead of the New York Mets in the race for the second of three NL wild cards.
Rockies vs. Padres Game Pick
Spread Pick for Rockies vs. Padres
- San Diego Padres -1.5 (4 Units)
The playoffs are on the horizon for the San Diego Padres. They are four games up on the New York Mets on the second wild card, and trail the Dodgers by 2.5 games for first place in the National League West. German Marquez has not looked comfortable since returning from right biceps tendinitis, allowing 17 runs over 14.1 innings across three starts since coming back from the injured list. Through 23 innings, he has a 6.31 ERA, 1.70 WHIP, and 77:42 K:BB across 112.2 innings this season, and he is impossible to trust in this contest against the Padres. The Rockies have lost eight of 11 against San Diego. Take the Padres by two.
OVER/UNDER PICK for Rockies vs. Padres
- OVER (4 Units)
San Diego has put up some crooked numbers against the Rockies, and I expect that trend to continue with Marquez on the mound. Over their last 10 games against Colorado, they are averaging well over six runs per game and over 10 hits per contest. The Rockies are faltering and in full tank mode, losing 15 of their last 18 games facing National League foes. Darvish has not been particularly sharp, and I like the Rockies to deliver three or four runs to drive the total well over the projected number. Take the over.
