Nuggets vs Timberwolves Prediction

The Minnesota Timberwolves will host the Denver Nuggets at Target Center as the Nuggets seek their first road win. Tipoff is slated for 10:30 PM Eastern. Read on for the Nuggets vs the Timberwolves prediction and more free NBA picks.

Jokic Gets 2nd Triple-double In As Many Games

Denver pulled away at the end of the first quarter and never looked back as they topped the Suns in a 133-111 final on Saturday.  All five starters finished in double figures, with Jamal Murray leading the way with 23 points. Nikola Jokic added 14 points, 15 assists, and 14 rebounds. Denver shot over 51% from the floor and won the battle on the boards and outscored Phoenix in the painted area.

Denver enters this contest averaging 132.0 points per game, which lands them first in the league. The Nuggets continue to excel when it comes to sheer scoring output, and they’re connecting efficiently from the field—shooting about 52.5% overall and 91.1% from the free-throw line so far this season. They also sit top five in fast break and paint scoring. Though their offensive rebound rate is in the bottom half of the league, the Nuggets are hovering around the top five in terms of ball security.

Key Stats:

  • Aaron Gordon: 33.5 points per game
  • Nikola Jokić: 13.5 rebounds per game
  • Free Throw Percentage: 91.1%

On the defensive end of the court, the Nuggets are allowing 124.0 points per game, which ranks them 23rd in the league. They’ve been vulnerable to opponent field-goal percentage — surrendering about 47.1% from the floor so far. While they force a solid number of turnovers at roughly 14.5 per game to create transition buckets, the Nuggets have also been able to climb into the top 10 in overall rebounding rate and are top 10 in opponent free throw attempts per game. That said, Denver is last in the league when it comes to defending the perimeter, with nearly 18 allowed per game.

Key Injuries: N/A

Timberwolves Hold On At Home

Minnesota held on at home against the Pacers as they won 114-110 on Sunday.  The Timberwolves pulled away early in the second half, but the Pacers never surrendered. Four starters finished in double figures as Julius Randle scored 31 and Naz Reid added 16 off the bench. Minnesota shot just over 46% from the floor, and while they lost the rebound battle, they outscored Indiana in the paint and finished +3 in turnovers. Anthony Edwards played in just three minutes and left due to a hamstring injury and is questionable tonight.

Minnesota enters this contest averaging 114 points per game, which lands them at 24th in the league. The Timberwolves are pretty middle of the pack when it comes to overall shooting percentage, but they sit bottom 10 in both fast break points and paint points scored per game. Trips to the line have been seldom to start the season, where Minnesota is average, but the Timberwolves have been strong on the offensive glass and are top 10 in offensive rebound rate.

Key Stats:

  • Anthony Edwards: 36 points per game
  • Julius Randle: 8.0 rebounds per game
  • Free Throw Percentage: 73.2%

On the defensive end of the court, Minnesota is allowing 121 points per game, which lands them at 19th in the NBA. The Timberwolves have defended the open court well and are right outside the top 10 in opponent paint points scored per game. While they've dropped to the bottom 10 in opponent effective field goal percentage and are sitting bottom five in foul rate, the Timberwolves have been able to close out possessions and limit second-chance points. The perimeter defense could be stronger, but Minnesota sits top 10 in blocks per game and leads the league in opponent field goal attempts per game.

Key Injuries: Anthony Edwards (GTD), Rob Dillingham (Out)

Nuggets vs Timberwolves Pick

Pick for Nuggets vs Timberwolves

  • Denver -1.5 (4 Units)

While it remains to be seen if the Timberwolves will have their most dynamic player in Edwards, the Nuggets have been operating as a well-oiled machine to start the season. They sit top 10 in turnovers and are leading the league in points per game, while hovering top three in virtually every shooting category. The defense guards without fouling and is hanging around the top 10 in terms of paint defense. Minnesota fouls at a bottom-five rate, so look for Denver to take advantage here.

Denver -1.5

Total for Nuggets vs Timberwolves

  • Over 227.5 (4 Units)

This should be a competitive ball game, but even still, the total is too low. Both of these teams sit top 10 in terms of pace of play, and the Nuggets have the best free-throw percentage in the league. Minnesota sits top 10 in 3-point shooting, and the Nuggets have allowed the most 3's made on them than any other team in the NBA. Additionally, Denver should get frequent trips to the line here, and with Minnesota sitting 7th in offensive rebounds, look for them to create second-chance points.
