Angels Unable To Find Wild Card

The Angels grabbed a win on Tuesday versus the Royals with a final score of 5-1. This is the third win for the Angels in their last four games. Los Angeles was unable to find the wild card this season as they fell out of playoff contention.

Los Angeles has fallen out of playoff contention with their .471 winning percentage, trailing the lowest wild card at .525. The Angels have not had much success on either end of the field as they struggle on both offense and defense. The Angels are 21st in runs this season with their batting average of .229, sitting second to last in the league. The Angels have relied on their slugging to grab runs as the team sits fifth in home runs, thanks to their .402 slugging percentage (15th). However, due to the lack of consistency, it has not been enough. The same can be said for their pitching, which sits 27th overall in ERA at 4.72 and 26th in both home runs and walks allowed.

Right-handed pitcher Kyle Hendricks will be taking the mound for the Angels on Thursday.

Kyle Hendricks:

  • is 6-9 with an ERA of 4.89 and 89 strikeouts in 26 appearances this season.
  • is 2-1 with an ERA of 3.33 and 19 strikeouts in 4 appearances versus the Royals in his career.

Royals Still In The Hunt

The Royals picked up a loss on Tuesday versus the Angels with a final score of 5-1. This is the third loss in the last four games for the Royals as they continue to struggle at the plate in recent games. This has been an issue as the Royals are still in the hunt for a wild card position with their winning percentage of .507 trailing the Mariners at .525.

Kansas City this season has looked great at the mound, ranking fourth overall in ERA at 3.66, fourth in home runs, and seventh overall in walks allowed. However, despite their prowess on the mound, it has not been enough to counterbalance their poor hitting. The Royals are 27th in runs this season, ranking 25th in batting average at .307 and 21st in slugging percentage at .393. This lack of offense has been apparent in recent games as six of their last nine games have resulted in three or less runs. The Royals will need to focus on their hitting if they wish to make an attempt at the wild card as their pitching simply has not been enough lately.

Right-handed pitcher Seth Lugo will be starting for the Royals on Thursday.

Seth Lugo:

  • is 8-7 with an ERA of 4.15 and 125 strikeouts in 26 appearances this season.
  • has a 2-0 record with an ERA of 1.61 and 27 strikeouts in 4 appearances versus the Angels in his career.

Royals Money Line (-156) (4 units)

The Royals have a record of 11-4 as favorites in their last 15 games at home. The Angels have a record of 5-10 as underdogs in their last 15 games on the road. The Royals are 5-3 in their last 8 games against the Angels. The Royals have all the motivation going into this game as they still have a chance at a playoff spot. On top of the motivation, Seth Lugo has looked great in his four appearances against the Angels in his career. While I do not care for the runline for either team, I do feel safe in taking the Royals to win.

I am taking the Royals on the Money Line.

Under 9 (-122) (5 units)

The Royals have an over/under record of 0-4 in their last four games. The Angels have an over/under record of 3-6 in their last nine games. The Royals are motivated to win this game and they are not going to win if they are forced to rely on their offense. Kansas City will keep this game low scoring and only need to win with a few runs. Seth Lugo will be crucial in this as he has an ERA of only 1.61 in his career against the Angels and will likely allow few runs.

I am siding with the under at 9.
