The Arizona Diamondbacks and Houston Astros open a three-game series Friday, September 4, 2026, at Daikin Park in Houston, Texas. First pitch is scheduled for 8:10 PM ET with MLB.TV providing coverage. Arizona enters the matchup at 74-67 overall and 33-36 on the road, while Houston is 71-69 overall and 35-36 at home. The Diamondbacks are second in the NL West, nine games behind the division lead, while Houston holds a two-game advantage at the top of the AL West. ESPN Analytics gives the Astros a narrow 53.0% win probability compared with 47.0% for Arizona. At the time of this writing the odds were not released. Starting Pitchers

Merrill Kelly gets the start for Arizona with a 9-12 record, 5.08 ERA and 1.48 WHIP through 141.2 innings. He has allowed 146 hits and 26 home runs while recording 95 strikeouts against 64 walks. Cristian Javier takes the mound for Houston at 1-5 with a 6.45 ERA and 1.63 WHIP through 44.2 innings. He has surrendered 54 hits and eight home runs while striking out 42 and walking 19. Neither starter enters with particularly strong run-prevention numbers, but Arizona has the more established workload and the lower ERA and WHIP in Friday's pitching matchup.

Diamondbacks Look to Build on a Shutout Win

Arizona enters Friday at 74-67 overall but has been slightly below .500 away from home at 33-36. The Diamondbacks have gone 2-3 over their last five games, with their most recent victory coming by a 1-0 score. Their recent results have been inconsistent offensively, as Arizona has scored two runs or fewer in four of its last five games. The Diamondbacks remain in second place in the NL West, however, and are only a half-game ahead of the third-place club entering this matchup.

The Diamondbacks are batting .243 as a team with 628 runs, 1,145 hits and 138 home runs. Arizona owns a .315 on-base percentage and .395 slugging percentage. Those numbers show an offense that has produced slightly fewer runs than Houston despite holding a small advantage in batting average and total hits. Power has been the larger difference between these teams, with Arizona entering Friday having hit 46 fewer home runs than the Astros.

Arizona's pitching staff has posted a 4.16 ERA and 1.29 WHIP while holding opponents to a .249 batting average. Those overall pitching numbers are stronger than Houston's 4.58 ERA and 1.36 WHIP, but Friday's starting assignment presents a concern. Arizona's scheduled starter has allowed 26 home runs in 141.2 innings and enters with a 5.08 ERA. The Diamondbacks will need another solid pitching performance because their offense has struggled to consistently generate runs over the past week.

Astros Try to Protect the AL West Lead

Houston enters the series at 71-69 and remains in first place in the AL West despite being only two games ahead of Texas. The Astros are 35-36 at Daikin Park, so home field has not produced a significant advantage this season. Houston has nevertheless won three of its last five games, including a 2-0 victory in its most recent completed contest. The Astros have allowed three runs or fewer in three of their last five, although they have also been held to two runs or fewer twice during that stretch.

Houston is batting .240 with 633 runs, 1,129 hits and 184 home runs. The Astros have a .315 on-base percentage and .408 slugging percentage. Their batting average is three points below Arizona's and the teams have identical on-base percentages, but Houston owns the significant power advantage. The Astros have hit 46 more home runs and have scored five more runs despite recording 16 fewer hits, illustrating how much more of their offensive production has come through extra-base power.

The biggest question for Houston is whether its scheduled starter can contain an Arizona offense that has been quiet recently. The Astros carry a 4.58 team ERA and 1.36 WHIP while opponents are batting .239 against them. Houston has also issued 579 walks as a staff compared with Arizona's 423. The Astros have enough power to take advantage of Arizona's pitching vulnerabilities, but their own pitching numbers make it difficult to trust them as a strong favorite if the market eventually prices them that way.

Arizona Diamondbacks vs Houston Astros Picks and Prediction

Pick: Arizona Diamondbacks Moneyline

The Arizona Diamondbacks Moneyline is the preferred side in what looks like a relatively close matchup. Houston has the superior power numbers and ESPN Analytics slightly favors the Astros, but Arizona enters with the better overall record and the stronger season-long pitching statistics. The most important factor is the starting matchup. Neither scheduled starter has pitched particularly well, but Arizona holds advantages in ERA and WHIP while Houston's starter enters with a 6.45 ERA and has allowed 54 hits across only 44.2 innings. With the Diamondbacks also carrying a slightly better batting average and a 3.5-game advantage in the overall standings, Arizona offers the better side in a matchup that should be priced close to even.

Pick: Over 8.5

The Over 8.5 is the preferred target number. Friday's pitching matchup features starters carrying ERAs of 5.08 and 6.45, while Houston's staff owns a 4.58 ERA for the season. Arizona's offense has been quiet lately, but this represents a better opportunity for the Diamondbacks to generate runs against a vulnerable starting matchup. Houston has considerably more home-run power, and Arizona's scheduled starter has already surrendered 26 home runs this season. With both starting pitchers carrying WHIPs of at least 1.48 and neither bullpen being supported by dominant overall staff numbers, Over 8.5 is the preferred total if that number is available.
