The Arizona Diamondbacks and Houston Astros close their three-game interleague series Sunday afternoon at Daikin Park in Houston, Texas. First pitch is scheduled for 2:10 PM ET on September 6 with MLB.TV carrying the game. Arizona enters the matchup at 74-68 overall and 33-37 on the road, while Houston is 73-69 overall and 37-36 at home. The Diamondbacks sit third in the NL West, 10.5 games behind Los Angeles, while the Astros lead the AL West by three games. Starting Pitchers

Arizona is scheduled to start Eduardo Rodriguez, who enters at 14-5 with a 2.59 ERA and 1.22 WHIP through 167 innings. Rodriguez has allowed 148 hits and 55 walks while recording 122 strikeouts and surrendering 14 home runs. Houston counters with Peter Lambert, who is 8-7 with a 3.66 ERA and 1.24 WHIP through 132.2 innings. Lambert has allowed 109 hits and 56 walks while striking out 131 and giving up 13 home runs. Arizona owns the clear ERA advantage while also holding a slight edge in WHIP, giving the Diamondbacks an important starting-pitching advantage in an otherwise closely matched game.

Arizona Has the Starting-Pitching Advantage

Arizona enters Sunday at 74-68 overall and 33-37 away from home. The Diamondbacks have struggled recently, dropping four of their last five completed games after Friday's 3-1 loss in Houston. Their only victory during that stretch was a 1-0 home win over Philadelphia. Arizona has scored just six total runs over its last five completed games, making offensive production the most significant concern entering the series finale.

The Diamondbacks are batting .242 with 1,148 hits, 629 runs and 139 home runs while posting a .314 on-base percentage and .394 slugging percentage. Arizona holds small advantages over Houston in batting average and total hits, but the Diamondbacks trail in runs, home runs, on-base percentage and slugging percentage. The largest offensive difference is power, with Houston hitting 47 more home runs. Arizona's ability to consistently put the ball in play has kept the offense competitive, but the recent lack of scoring has become difficult to overlook.

Arizona's pitching numbers provide a stronger reason to back the Diamondbacks. The staff owns a 4.15 ERA and 1.28 WHIP, both better than Houston's 4.53 ERA and 1.36 WHIP. Sunday's scheduled starter strengthens that advantage considerably with a 2.59 ERA across 167 innings. The Diamondbacks have also demonstrated the ability to win low-scoring games, including their recent 1-0 victory, and their pitching advantage gives them a realistic opportunity to slow down a Houston club that has been playing well.

Houston Brings Momentum and More Power

Houston enters Sunday at 73-69 overall and sits atop the AL West with a three-game lead over Texas. The Astros are 37-36 at Daikin Park and have won four of their last five completed games. Houston has also won three straight, including Friday's 3-1 victory over Arizona. The Astros have allowed only six total runs during those three consecutive victories, providing a strong combination of recent pitching and timely offense heading into the series finale.

The Astros are batting .240 with 1,144 hits, 642 runs and 186 home runs while carrying a .315 on-base percentage and .408 slugging percentage. Although Arizona has a slightly better batting average and four more hits, Houston has scored 13 more runs and hit 47 more home runs. That substantial power advantage gives the Astros greater potential to change the game with one swing, and their .408 slugging percentage is also noticeably better than Arizona's .394 mark.

Houston's season-long pitching statistics are less impressive, with a 4.53 ERA and 1.36 WHIP while opponents are batting .238. Arizona owns advantages in ERA and WHIP, although Houston has been the better run-prevention team recently. The Astros have allowed two runs or fewer in three consecutive games and have surrendered only 11 runs across their last five completed contests. The question Sunday is whether that recent improvement can continue against an Arizona starter whose season numbers are considerably stronger than Houston's scheduled starter.

Arizona Diamondbacks vs Houston Astros Picks and Prediction

Pick: Arizona Diamondbacks Moneyline

Arizona is the preferred side in what projects as a closely contested series finale. Houston has the better recent form and owns a significant power advantage, but the starting-pitching matchup tilts heavily toward the Diamondbacks. Arizona's scheduled starter enters with a 2.59 ERA and 1.22 WHIP compared with Houston's 3.66 ERA and 1.24 WHIP, while the Diamondbacks also own the better overall team ERA and WHIP. ESPN Analytics essentially views the matchup as a coin flip, giving Houston only a 51.2% edge. With Arizona holding the stronger pitching profile, the Diamondbacks moneyline is the preferred play if the price is reasonable.

Pick: Under 8.5

Under 8.5 is the preferred target number for Sunday's matchup. Arizona's last five completed games have produced totals of four, one, eight, three and nine runs, and the Diamondbacks have scored just six runs during that span. Houston has also been playing low-scoring baseball lately, allowing only six runs over its current three-game winning streak. Sunday's starting matchup strengthens the Under case, particularly with Arizona sending out a starter carrying a 2.59 ERA through 167 innings. Houston has the power to threaten this wager, but the combination of Arizona's recent offensive struggles, Houston's improved run prevention and the starting matchup makes Under 8.5 the stronger position.
