They are out of playoff contention, but they have had a positive season, and they need more consistency out of their rotation next year if they want to compete for a playoff spot. Red Sox Clinging to the Final Wild Card
After dropping the first game of this series Tuesday against the As, the Red Sox find themselves with a 2.5 game lead on the third and final wild card spot. The Sox managed just one run on eight hits, including three from Trevor Story, who also became just the fourth 30-for-30 base stealer in MLB's expansion era (since 1961). Boston was 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.
- They will trot out Brayan Bello in the final game of this set. He took the loss last Saturday as the Red Sox were dropped 5-3 by the Yankees, giving up four runs on five hits and three walks over five innings.
- He struck out four in the contest. The right-hander was hit for more than three runs for the first time since Aug. 10, which was also the last time he got handed a losing decision.
