Ginn Making 15th Start
J.T. Ginn will toe the rubber in the final game of this series with the Red Sox.
- During his most recent start in last Friday's 3-0 win over the Reds, Ginn struck out six batters and allowed no runs on two hits and four walks before being pulled with one out in the fifth inning after experiencing right calf cramping.
- The right-hander has responded well to treatment over the last two days and will not have to miss a turn through the rotation.
- Since being reinstated from the injured list on June 16, Ginn has gone 2-4 with a 4.43 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, and 70:21 K:BB in 63 innings over 17 appearances (10 starts). On the season, he has a 4.69 ERA over 80 total frames.
Entering play Wednesday afternoon, the Athletics are 71-80, third place in the American League West. They are out of playoff contention, but they have had a positive season, and they need more consistency out of their rotation next year if they want to compete for a playoff spot. They are 27th in ERA while allowing the third most home runs in the Majors.

Red Sox Clinging to the Final Wild Card
After dropping the first game of this series Tuesday against the As, the Red Sox find themselves with a 2.5 game lead on the third and final wild card spot. The Sox managed just one run on eight hits, including three from Trevor Story, who also became just the fourth 30-for-30 base stealer in MLB's expansion era (since 1961). Boston was 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.
- They will trot out Brayan Bello in the final game of this set. He took the loss last Saturday as the Red Sox were dropped 5-3 by the Yankees, giving up four runs on five hits and three walks over five innings.
- He struck out four in the contest. The right-hander was hit for more than three runs for the first time since Aug. 10, which was also the last time he got handed a losing decision.
- Bello has given Boston at least five innings in every start since the beginning of June, posting a 3.06 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, and 89:32 K:BB over 117.2 innings during that time. On the season, he has a 3.25 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, and a 118/54 K/BB ratio across 157 2/3 innings.
Athletics vs. Red Sox Game Pick
Money Line Pick for Athletics vs. Red Sox
- Boston Red Sox -1.5 (4 units)
The Red Sox are fighting for their postseason lives as they clash with the Athletics. Brayan Bello will get the ball for this final game, and he has been a strong contributor for the Sox lately. Bello has given Boston at least five innings in every start since the beginning of June, posting a 3.06 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, and 89:32 K:BB over 117.2 innings during that time. On the season, he has a 3.25 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, and a 118/54 K/BB ratio across 157 2/3 innings. J.T. Ginn has a difficult task here on the road in a friendly environment for the Sox. Sacramento has lost 14 of its last 20 against Boston. Take the Sox.
OVER/UNDER PICK for Athletics vs. Red Sox
- OVER (4 units)
J.T. Ginn is healthy enough to pitch in this one. Last week, the former Mets prospect had issues with consistent strikes, as seen in four walks, but he struck out six and held the Cincinnati lineup to just two hits. Ginn has a chance to be a solid backend starter, but it’s hard to trust him in this meeting with the Sox. Sacramento is in full spoiler mode at this point, and they would like nothing more than to deliver another L to the Sox. I just do not see it happening with Ginn on the mound at Fenway. Boston has averaged 5.40 runs over their last 10 games against the As. Look for both teams to deliver at least four runs and have this total go over the projected number.
