The Athletics will visit the Boston Red Sox on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts. First pitch is scheduled for 4:10 p.m. ET, with coverage available on MLB.TV and FS1. The Athletics enter the weekend at 45-70 overall and 24-34 on the road, while Boston is 63-51 overall and 28-29 at home. At the time of this writing the odds were not released. Starting Pitchers

The Athletics are scheduled to start Gage Jump, who enters at 4-7 with a 4.59 ERA and 1.47 WHIP over 66.2 innings. Jump has allowed 67 hits and seven home runs while recording 73 strikeouts against 31 walks. His ability to generate strikeouts gives him some upside, but the combination of a 4.59 ERA and 1.47 WHIP creates a difficult matchup against a Boston team entering the weekend in excellent form.

Boston is expected to counter with Jake Bennett, who is 7-4 with a 2.90 ERA and 1.01 WHIP through 71.1 innings. Bennett has allowed 59 hits and only five home runs while recording 50 strikeouts against 13 walks. His control has been particularly impressive, and the considerable difference in WHIP between the two starters gives Boston an important pitching advantage.

Athletics Searching for Answers During Eight-Game Slide

The Athletics enter the weekend at 45-70 overall with a 24-34 road record and have lost eight consecutive games. They are 0-5 over their last five completed contests, losing 8-6 and 11-0 against Detroit before Cincinnati completed a three-game sweep with victories of 5-4, 3-2 and 6-5. Three of those five losses came by a single run, but the Athletics have been unable to turn competitive games into victories.

The Athletics are batting .244 with a .319 on-base percentage and .399 slugging percentage this season. They have scored 493 runs on 946 hits while hitting 135 home runs. Pitching has been the much larger problem, with the staff carrying a 5.40 ERA and 1.49 WHIP. Athletics pitchers have issued 455 walks while recording 971 strikeouts, and opposing hitters are batting .268 against them.

The pitching numbers are the biggest concern for the Athletics in this matchup. Their offense has actually scored one more run than Boston this season and has hit 19 more home runs, but a 5.40 team ERA makes it difficult to consistently turn that production into victories. Jump's 1.47 WHIP is also close to the team's 1.49 mark, so limiting baserunners will be critical against a Boston team that has been taking advantage of its scoring opportunities.

Red Sox Take an Eight-Game Winning Streak Into the Weekend

Boston enters the weekend at 63-51 overall and 28-29 at Fenway Park. The Red Sox have won eight consecutive games and are 5-0 over their last five completed contests. Boston closed its series against the Dodgers with victories of 3-2 and 8-4 before sweeping three games from the White Sox by scores of 14-2, 4-0 and 12-11 in 13 innings. The Red Sox have scored 41 runs across those five victories.

Boston is batting .246 with a .317 on-base percentage and .400 slugging percentage. The Red Sox have scored 492 runs on 925 hits while hitting 116 home runs. Their biggest statistical advantage comes on the mound, where Boston owns a 3.49 ERA and 1.22 WHIP. Red Sox pitchers have recorded 965 strikeouts against only 319 walks while holding opponents to a .240 batting average.

The difference between these teams becomes clear when comparing their pitching staffs. Boston's 3.49 ERA is nearly two full runs better than the Athletics' 5.40 mark, while the Red Sox also own significant advantages in WHIP and opponents' batting average. Bennett strengthens that advantage Saturday with his 2.90 ERA and 1.01 WHIP, giving Boston a strong opportunity to control this matchup from the opening innings.

Athletics vs Boston Red Sox Picks and Prediction

  • Pick: Boston Red Sox Moneyline

I'm taking the Boston Red Sox on the moneyline. The Athletics have actually produced slightly more runs and more home runs this season, but the difference in pitching is too substantial for me to overlook. Boston owns a 3.49 team ERA compared with 5.40 for the Athletics and a 1.22 WHIP compared with 1.49.

The starting pitching matchup strengthens the Boston side. Bennett enters with a 2.90 ERA and 1.01 WHIP compared with Jump's 4.59 ERA and 1.47 WHIP. Add Boston's eight-game winning streak against an Athletics team that has lost eight straight, and I prefer the Red Sox at Fenway Park.

  • Pick: Over 9

I'm taking the Over 9 if that is where the total is set. Boston has scored 41 runs over its last five games, including offensive performances of 14 and 12 runs against the White Sox. That offense now gets an Athletics pitching staff carrying a 5.40 ERA and 1.49 WHIP.

Bennett gives Boston a strong chance to limit the Athletics, but the Athletics` has still scored 493 runs and hit 135 home runs this season. I don't need both teams to produce equally for the Over to have value. Boston should have opportunities against Jump and an Athletics pitching staff that has struggled throughout the season, making the Over my preferred total.
