Starting Pitchers

The Athletics are scheduled to start J.T. Ginn, who enters Sunday with an 8-6 record, 3.51 ERA and 1.21 WHIP. The right-hander has worked 115.1 innings, allowing 89 hits and 13 home runs while recording 105 strikeouts against 51 walks. Boston counters with Patrick Sandoval, who is 1-0 with a 3.38 ERA and 1.67 WHIP through 24.0 innings. The left-hander has allowed 30 hits and three home runs while striking out 25 and walking 10.

Athletics Search for a Way Out of Their Slump

The Athletics enter this matchup at 45-71 overall with a 24-35 record away from home. Their recent form has been particularly difficult, as they have lost each of their last five completed games. The Athletics lost 13-1 to Boston on Friday after dropping three consecutive games against Cincinnati by scores of 6-5, 3-2 and 5-4. They began the five-game stretch with an 11-0 loss against Detroit. Saturday's result is not included in these records.

The season statistics show an offense that has been more competitive than the overall record might indicate. The Athletics are batting .243 with a .317 on-base percentage and .397 slugging percentage. They have scored 499 runs, collected 957 hits and hit 137 home runs. The pitching staff has been the much larger problem, entering with a 5.47 ERA and 1.50 WHIP while allowing opponents to bat .269.

Ginn gives the Athletics a better opportunity than those overall pitching numbers suggest. His 3.51 ERA and 1.21 WHIP are substantially stronger than the club's season marks. The concern is whether Oakland can give him enough support against a Boston club that has been playing excellent baseball. After scoring only one run Friday, the Athletics need a significant offensive improvement to prevent Boston from controlling another game.

Boston Continues Its Impressive Winning Run

Boston enters Sunday at 64-51 overall and 29-29 at Fenway Park. The Red Sox have won each of their last five completed games and entered Saturday riding a nine-game winning streak. Boston crushed the Athletics 13-1 Friday after sweeping three games from the Chicago White Sox, winning 12-11 in 13 innings, 4-0 and 14-2. The Red Sox also defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 8-4 to begin their current five-game stretch.

Boston is batting .249 this season with a .320 on-base percentage and .404 slugging percentage. The Red Sox have scored 517 runs, collected 956 hits and hit 118 home runs. Their biggest advantage in this matchup comes from the pitching staff, which owns a 3.48 ERA and 1.22 WHIP while holding opposing hitters to a .239 batting average.

That pitching difference is difficult to overlook. Boston's 3.48 team ERA is nearly two full runs better than the Athletics' 5.47 mark. The Red Sox have also been producing plenty of offense recently, scoring at least eight runs in four of their last five completed games. Ginn provides the Athletics with a legitimate chance to slow that offense, but Boston's combination of recent form and season-long pitching gives the Red Sox a significant overall advantage.

Athletics vs Boston Red Sox Picks and Prediction

  • Pick: Boston Red Sox Moneyline

The Boston Red Sox are the pick to win Sunday's game.

The starting pitching matchup is closer than the overall records suggest. Ginn's 3.51 ERA and 1.21 WHIP give the Athletics a capable starter, while Sandoval's 1.67 WHIP indicates Boston's starter has allowed plenty of baserunners despite his 3.38 ERA. That prevents this from being a selection based entirely on the starters.

The difference comes from everything surrounding them. Boston enters with a 64-51 record compared with Oakland at 45-71, and the Red Sox have a massive advantage in team pitching. Boston also entered Saturday on a nine-game winning streak while the Athletics had lost nine straight. Friday's 13-1 result demonstrated the considerable gap between these teams when Boston gets into the Athletics' pitching staff.

Take the Boston Red Sox to win.

  • Pick: Over 9.0

The over is the preferred total if the number is set at 9.0.

Ginn has pitched well enough to make an automatic Boston offensive explosion less certain, but the Athletics' bullpen and overall pitching staff remain difficult to trust. The club's 5.47 season ERA and 1.50 WHIP create considerable scoring potential for Boston once Ginn leaves the game.

The Athletics also have an opportunity to contribute against Sandoval. His 1.67 WHIP through 24 innings is high enough to suggest Oakland should have baserunners, even if its recent offensive results have been poor. Boston does not necessarily need another 13-run performance for this game to get over the number.

Take the over if the total is set at 9.0.

Prediction: Boston Red Sox 7, Athletics 4
