The Athletics enter at 61-93 overall and 32-47 on the road, while Cleveland is 79-75 overall and 39-40 at home. Cleveland won the first completed game of the series 5-3 on September 18 and has won three consecutive completed games, while the Athletics have dropped four straight. The Guardians enter the weekend holding first place in the AL Central, one game ahead of Chicago, while the Athletics are 16 games back in the AL West. Starting Pitchers

The Athletics are scheduled to start Jack Perkins, who enters at 3-11 with a 6.14 ERA and 1.48 WHIP through 110 innings. Perkins has allowed 115 hits and 20 home runs while striking out 127 and walking 48. Cleveland counters with Gavin Williams, who is 13-8 with a 3.78 ERA and 1.10 WHIP through 174 innings. Williams has surrendered 136 hits and 27 home runs while recording an impressive 235 strikeouts against 56 walks. This is one of the clearest starting-pitching advantages on Sunday's schedule. Williams owns a 2.36-run advantage in ERA and a sizable edge in WHIP while combining durability with elite strikeout production. Perkins has demonstrated the ability to miss bats, but his high ERA, elevated WHIP and 3-11 record make this a difficult matchup against a Cleveland club playing for the AL Central lead.

Athletics Face Another Difficult Road Assignment

The Athletics come into Sunday at 61-93 overall and have been particularly vulnerable away from home, going 32-47 on the road. They have lost four straight completed games after falling 5-3 to Cleveland, 10-1, 4-3 and 2-1 in three consecutive games at Tampa Bay. Their lone victory in the last five was an 8-7 win over Seattle. The Athletics have gone 1-4 over that stretch while being outscored 28-16, and they have scored three runs or fewer in each of their four consecutive losses.

The season-long offensive numbers are somewhat better than the record might suggest. The Athletics are batting .244 with 1,270 hits, 664 runs and 187 home runs. They own a .316 on-base percentage and .401 slugging percentage, giving them advantages over Cleveland in batting average, runs, home runs and slugging. The pitching staff has been the much bigger problem. The Athletics carry a 5.41 team ERA, 1.50 WHIP and .270 opponent batting average while recording 1,288 strikeouts against 607 walks.

That pitching weakness becomes particularly concerning Sunday because the Athletics don't have their stronger starter statistics to offset the season-long numbers. Their scheduled starter's 6.14 ERA is actually higher than the team's already elevated 5.41 ERA, and Cleveland has scored at least five runs in each of its last three victories. The Athletics have enough power to make this matchup interesting if they can generate early offense, but asking a struggling pitching staff to contain Cleveland for nine innings is a major concern.

Guardians Have the Pitching Edge in a Division Race

Cleveland enters Sunday at 79-75 and holds first place in the AL Central by one game. The Guardians have won four of their last five completed games and three straight, beating the Athletics 5-3 after consecutive 6-3 and 7-6 victories over Chicago. Their only loss over the five-game span was a 7-3 defeat, while their other victory came 9-2. Cleveland has scored 30 runs over those five games while allowing 21, producing an average of six runs per game during the stretch.

The Guardians haven't been the stronger offensive team statistically over the full season. Cleveland is batting .237 with 1,216 hits, 636 runs and 149 home runs while carrying a .315 on-base percentage and .375 slugging percentage. The difference between these teams is on the mound. Cleveland owns a 3.79 ERA and 1.26 WHIP with opponents batting just .236. The Guardians have also recorded 1,459 strikeouts against 509 walks, compared with the Athletics' 1,288 strikeouts and 607 walks.

Cleveland's pitching advantage is enormous when the team numbers and Sunday's scheduled starters are combined. The Guardians' team ERA is 1.62 runs better than Oakland's, their WHIP is 0.24 lower and opponents are batting 34 points lower against Cleveland pitching. The Athletics have more home-run power and the better season slugging percentage, so Cleveland cannot completely dismiss the opposing offense. Still, the Guardians have the stronger pitching staff, the much stronger starting matchup and considerably better recent form.

Athletics vs Cleveland Guardians Picks and Prediction

Pick: Cleveland Guardians Moneyline

Cleveland is the side to back Sunday. The Guardians enter on a three-game winning streak and have won four of their last five completed games, while the Athletics have lost four straight. More importantly, Cleveland holds substantial advantages both in the starting matchup and across the entire pitching staff. The Guardians have a 3.79 team ERA compared with the Athletics' 5.41, and their scheduled starter carries a 3.78 ERA and 1.10 WHIP into a matchup against an opposing starter with a 6.14 ERA and 1.48 WHIP. The Athletics possess the better power numbers, but Cleveland's ability to suppress offense and generate strikeouts gives the Guardians the stronger overall profile. With no confirmed price available, Cleveland is the moneyline pick, although the eventual odds will determine how much value remains.

Pick: Over 8 or Lower

The Over 8 or lower is the preferred total despite Cleveland's pitching strength. The primary reason is the Athletics' side of the pitching matchup. Their scheduled starter owns a 6.14 ERA, while the staff as a whole has allowed opponents to bat .270 and carries a 5.41 ERA and 1.50 WHIP. Cleveland has also heated up offensively, scoring 30 runs over its last five completed games and at least five runs in each of its three consecutive victories. The Athletics have enough power to contribute against even a strong Cleveland starter, with 187 home runs and a .401 slugging percentage for the season. Cleveland could do much of the work itself against the Athletics' struggling run prevention, making an eight-run target low enough to favor the Over.

Final Picks: Cleveland Guardians Moneyline and Over 8 or Lower
