Starting Pitchers

Mason Barnett gets the start for the Athletics and enters Monday at 1-3 with a 6.16 ERA and 1.45 WHIP through 38 innings. Barnett has allowed 35 hits while recording 36 strikeouts against 20 walks and surrendering 11 home runs. Kansas City counters with Michael Wacha, who is 5-8 with a 3.46 ERA and 1.15 WHIP through 150.2 innings. Wacha has allowed 132 hits while striking out 117, walking 41 and surrendering 18 home runs. Kansas City owns a substantial starting-pitching advantage based on ERA, WHIP and the much larger body of work.

Athletics Need Their Offense to Carry the Load

The Athletics enter Monday at 48-75 overall and have gone 26-35 on the road. They have lost four of their last five games, with their only victory during that stretch coming by an 8-3 score. The four defeats came by scores of 5-3, 8-4, 12-4 and 10-6. Those results highlight the biggest issue facing the Athletics: they have scored at least three runs in every game during the stretch but have repeatedly been unable to prevent opponents from putting up bigger numbers.

The Athletics are batting .243 with a .317 on-base percentage and .400 slugging percentage. They have collected 1,016 hits, scored 535 runs and hit 146 home runs. Their pitching has been considerably less effective, producing a 5.48 team ERA and 1.50 WHIP while allowing opponents to bat .269. The staff has recorded 1,039 strikeouts against 489 walks.

Offense gives the Athletics their best chance to win. They lead Kansas City in runs, hits, home runs, on-base percentage and slugging percentage while matching the Royals with a .243 batting average. The problem is a pitching staff that has surrendered 38 runs over the last five games. That weakness becomes even more concerning Monday because the Athletics enter with a major disadvantage in the starting-pitching matchup.

Royals Have the Pitching Advantage at Home

Kansas City enters Monday at 50-74 overall and has been more competitive at Kauffman Stadium, where it owns a 29-30 record. The Royals have also lost four of their last five games, with the lone victory coming by a 7-6 score. Their defeats came by scores of 1-0, 4-2, 5-4 in 10 innings and 6-5. Three of those four losses were decided by one or two runs, so Kansas City has been considerably more competitive than its recent record initially suggests.

The Royals are batting .243 with a .310 on-base percentage and .393 slugging percentage. Kansas City has collected 1,007 hits, scored 510 runs and hit 124 home runs. Its pitching staff has posted a 4.82 ERA and 1.42 WHIP while allowing opponents to hit .261. The Royals have recorded 917 strikeouts against 460 walks.

Kansas City's season-long pitching numbers are hardly dominant, but they are still better than those of the Athletics. The Royals have the lower team ERA, lower WHIP and better opponent batting average. More importantly, their starter enters with a 3.46 ERA and 1.15 WHIP. If Kansas City receives another solid performance from its starter, the Royals should have opportunities against an Athletics staff that has struggled badly to prevent runs.

Athletics vs. Kansas City Royals Picks and Prediction

Pick: Kansas City Royals ML

Kansas City is the moneyline selection despite the Athletics owning the stronger offensive numbers. The biggest difference is on the mound. The Royals' starter enters with a 3.46 ERA and 1.15 WHIP compared with a 6.16 ERA and 1.45 WHIP for the Athletics' starter. Kansas City also owns the better team ERA and WHIP and has been competitive at home with a 29-30 record. The Athletics have allowed at least five runs in four of their last five games and 38 runs overall during that stretch. That pitching weakness gives Kansas City the stronger path to victory.

Pick: Kansas City Royals ML

Pick: Over 9.0

The over is the preferred total if the number is set at nine. The Athletics have allowed 38 runs over their last five games, and four of those contests produced at least eight combined runs. Their 5.48 team ERA and 1.50 WHIP remain major concerns, while Monday's starter carries a 6.16 ERA and has allowed 11 home runs in only 38 innings. Kansas City has struggled offensively at times, but this is a favorable matchup for the Royals to generate more scoring opportunities than usual. The Athletics should also be capable of contributing against a Kansas City staff carrying a 4.82 ERA.

Take the Over if the total is set at 9.0.

Preview completed before game play on Sunday.
