Wentz Takes the Hill
Joey Wentz will toe the rubber in the second game of this interleague series with the Tigers.
- He was not a factor in the decision last Sunday against the Astros, allowing two runs on six hits and a walk over four innings. He struck out five in an abbreviated effort.
- Wentz was pulled from a 2-2 game after going through the lineup twice. He had thrown 93 pitches, so even if the Braves were comfortable letting him face the top of the order for a third time, his pitch count was arguing for his removal anyway. It's the third straight start that Wentz has failed to make it past the fourth inning, though Sunday's outing is certainly a step in the right direction after he was tagged for eight runs (six earned) in just 2.1 frames his last time out against the Mariners.
- Overall, Wentz is 3-5 with a 4.75 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, and 54:19 K:BB across 55 innings with Atlanta. This is a rematch against his former team. Atlanta has been eliminated from the postseason in what has been a disappointing season.

Montero Will Make 11th Start
The Tigers will start Keider Montero in the second game of this series with Atlanta. He allowed three hits over five scoreless innings Sunday, striking out five and earning a win over the Marlins.
- Montero gave up three singles and did not allow a runner to reach scoring position. He fell short of a quality start but threw 50 strikes on 76 total pitches; it was his highest pitch count since July 25, which was his last MLB appearance before spending just over a month with Triple-A Toledo.
- Jose Urquidy, Tommy Kahnle, and Will Vest finished the shutout. Montero pitched in relief in his last three appearances, including having thrown 1 2/3 innings three days before the game, so it was pretty surprising that he got through five last week. Of course, the matchup helped.
- With Sawyer-Gipson Long out of the mix, Montero has assumed a solid role in the rotation, at least until the playoffs arrive. Montero now owns a 4.32 ERA with a 63:27 K:BB through 83.1 MLB innings this season. He is lined up for this home start against Atlanta.
Detroit has seen its lead over the Cleveland Guardians cut to 3.5 games for first place in the AL Central.
Atlanta Braves vs. Detroit Tigers Game Pick
Money Line Pick for Braves vs. Tigers
- Detroit Tigers -1.5 (4 units)
The Tigers faced a roadblock against the Cleveland Guardians over the last week, allowing them to creep within 3.5 games of the division lead. They have three more games against the Guardians. This is a huge bounce-back home series for Detroit, and I like them to come out with a chip on their shoulder. Overall, Joey Wentz is 3-5 with a 4.75 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, and 54:19 K:BB across 55 innings with Atlanta, and he has a difficult task facing his former team. Atlanta has lost four of five facing AL foes. Take the Tigers with some juice to win by two or more.
Over/Under Pick for Braves vs. Tigers
- OVER (5 units)
Atlanta and Detroit have played in some high-scoring affairs over their last 10. Atlanta is averaging over five runs per game. Keider Montero and Joey Wentz will not light the world on fire, and neither pitcher will go more than four or five innings. The total has gone over in seven of Detroit’s last 10 games. Atlanta is in the spoiler role here, so their bats will be swinging freely, with a bunch of strikeouts but also some run production. I expect the Tigers to win, but this will be a high-scoring affair on a nice afternoon game in Comerica. Take the over.
