The Atlanta Braves will visit the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday afternoon for the opening game of a three-game weekend series at American Family Field in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. First pitch is scheduled for 4:10 PM ET on August 21, with coverage available on ESPN Unlimited and MLB.TV. Atlanta enters the matchup at 74-53 overall and 32-30 on the road, while Milwaukee owns a 78-49 record with an impressive 42-23 mark at home. Starting Pitchers

Chris Sale is scheduled to start for Atlanta and enters with a 12-8 record, 2.16 ERA, and 1.02 WHIP over 129 innings. The left-hander has allowed 103 hits while striking out 160 and walking only 28, with eight home runs surrendered. Milwaukee counters with Jacob Misiorowski, who has been even more dominant statistically at 12-5 with a 1.75 ERA and 0.75 WHIP through 139 innings. Misiorowski has allowed only 73 hits while recording 210 strikeouts against 31 walks and 13 home runs. This is an outstanding starting pitching matchup between two arms capable of controlling a game without much offensive assistance.

Atlanta Looks to Stop Its Recent Slide

Atlanta remains atop the National League East with a 74-53 record, but the Braves arrive in Milwaukee after a difficult stretch. They are 1-4 over their last five games and have dropped three straight. Atlanta lost all three games of its recent series in Minnesota after splitting the first two games shown from its preceding series at home. The Braves have also been much stronger overall than their 32-30 road record would suggest.

For the season, Atlanta is batting .246 with 606 runs, 1,058 hits, and 167 home runs. The Braves own a .311 on-base percentage and .414 slugging percentage. Their pitching has been a major strength, posting a 3.67 ERA and 1.25 WHIP while holding opponents to a .231 batting average. Atlanta has also recorded 1,082 strikeouts against 434 walks.

The concern is that Atlanta's recent results have not matched its overall statistical profile. Three consecutive losses entering this matchup increase the pressure on the offense, particularly against one of the toughest starting pitching assignments available. Atlanta has considerably more home-run production than Milwaukee, but generating traffic on the bases could be difficult in this matchup.

Milwaukee Continues to Set the Pace in the Central

Milwaukee enters Friday with the better overall record at 78-49 and holds first place in the National League Central. The Brewers are 3-2 in their last five games, with the stretch including a remarkable 22-0 victory over Seattle and consecutive road victories over Los Angeles. Milwaukee's 42-23 home record is another significant advantage entering this series.

The Brewers are batting .252 as a team with 635 runs, 1,084 hits, and 118 home runs. Milwaukee owns a .337 on-base percentage and .396 slugging percentage. The pitching numbers are especially impressive, with a 3.46 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, and .219 opponent batting average. Milwaukee pitchers have collected 1,232 strikeouts against just 398 walks.

Milwaukee's biggest advantage is its ability to prevent opponents from producing sustained offense. The Brewers have the better team ERA, WHIP, opponent batting average, and strikeout total, while also reaching base at a considerably higher rate offensively. Atlanta has the greater home-run threat, but Milwaukee's pitching depth and ability to consistently put runners aboard make the Brewers difficult to fade at American Family Field.

Atlanta Braves vs Milwaukee Brewers Picks and Prediction

Pick: Milwaukee Brewers Moneyline

Milwaukee gets the slight edge in what should be one of Friday's better pitching matchups. Atlanta is certainly capable of winning behind an excellent starter, but the Braves enter on a three-game losing streak and are just 1-4 over their last five. Milwaukee has been substantially stronger at home and owns advantages in team ERA, WHIP, opponent batting average, on-base percentage, and overall record. The starting pitching matchup is close enough that home field and the stronger supporting statistical profile become particularly important. Take the Milwaukee Brewers on the moneyline once the number becomes available.

Pick: Under 7.0

This matchup strongly favors a lower-scoring approach. Both starting pitchers carry ERAs well below 2.25 and WHIPs close to or below 1.00, while Milwaukee has allowed opponents to bat only .219 for the season. Atlanta's pitching staff has also performed at a high level with a 3.67 ERA and .231 opponent batting average. The Braves have plenty of home-run power, but both starters have done an excellent job limiting baserunners. Take the Under if the total is set at 7.0 or higher. If sportsbooks open the number at 6.5, the value becomes considerably thinner.
