Starting Pitchers

AJ Smith-Shawver is scheduled to start for Atlanta and enters at 0-0 with a 5.93 ERA and 1.61 WHIP across 13.2 innings. He has allowed 14 hits while recording 10 strikeouts against eight walks and has surrendered one home run. Jake Irvin gets the start for Washington and enters at 2-8 with a 5.62 ERA and 1.40 WHIP across 81.2 innings. He has allowed 75 hits while producing 82 strikeouts against 39 walks and has surrendered 14 home runs. Neither starter brings particularly strong season-long run-prevention numbers into Tuesday, creating the potential for both offenses to have early opportunities.

Braves Carry a Seven-Game Winning Streak

Atlanta enters Tuesday at 82-55 and has established itself at the top of the National League East. The Braves have won seven consecutive games and are a perfect 5-0 across their five most recently completed contests, defeating Colorado three times after taking the final two games of their series against Los Angeles. Three of those five victories were decided by one run, showing Atlanta has also been able to finish close games during its current surge.

The Braves are batting .248 with 636 runs, 1,149 hits and 173 home runs. They own a .312 on-base percentage and .412 slugging percentage. Atlanta has produced considerably fewer runs than Washington despite owning the much better overall record, but the Braves have balanced that offense with one of the strongest pitching profiles in the matchup.

Atlanta carries a 3.55 team ERA and 1.24 WHIP while holding opponents to a .232 batting average. The Braves have recorded 1,162 strikeouts against 461 walks. That run prevention has been a major difference between these teams, and Atlanta has also controlled the season series by winning eight of the first 11 meetings.

Nationals Try to Slow Atlanta's Momentum

Washington enters at 65-74 and sits 18 games behind Atlanta in the National League East. The Nationals are 31-39 at home and have gone 3-2 across their last five games. They won three straight against Colorado and Miami before dropping their most recent contest 6-2, so their recent form has been better than the overall record might suggest.

The Nationals are batting .248 with 720 runs, 1,177 hits and 190 home runs. They own a .324 on-base percentage and .430 slugging percentage. Washington actually holds the offensive edge over Atlanta in runs, hits, home runs, on-base percentage and slugging percentage, making this a more dangerous matchup than the standings alone would indicate.

The problem has been pitching. Washington owns a 4.67 team ERA and 1.39 WHIP while allowing opponents to bat .255. The Nationals have recorded 1,081 strikeouts against 508 walks. That creates a substantial gap from Atlanta's pitching profile, and the scheduled starter's 5.62 ERA adds another concern against a Braves team entering on a seven-game winning streak.

Atlanta Braves vs Washington Nationals Picks and Prediction

Pick: Atlanta Braves Moneyline

I'm backing the Atlanta Braves Moneyline. Washington has the stronger offensive statistics in several categories, but Atlanta has been far more complete over the course of the season. The Braves enter 27 games over .500, have won seven straight and lead the season series 8-3. Their team pitching numbers are also significantly stronger, with a 3.55 ERA and 1.24 WHIP compared with Washington's 4.67 ERA and 1.39 WHIP. The starting pitching matchup doesn't provide Atlanta with a major edge, but over nine innings the Braves' superior run prevention and current form make them the better side. Take the Atlanta Braves Moneyline.

Pick: Over 9.0

I'm targeting Over 9.0 because both scheduled starters enter with ERAs above 5.60 and WHIPs of at least 1.40. Washington has scored 720 runs and hit 190 home runs this season, while Atlanta brings 173 home runs and a seven-game winning streak into the matchup. The Nationals' team pitching numbers also create opportunities for Atlanta to contribute heavily to the total. A game in the neighborhood of 6-4 or 6-5 fits the statistical profile. Take the Over if the total is set at 9.0.
