Orioles Looking to be Competitive in September

The Baltimore Orioles are looking to recover after their 13-2 road loss against the San Francisco Giants on Sunday. The lineup was able to go 10-for-35 with six walks and 10 strikeouts on the day as Jackson Holliday stole a base. Baltimore went 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position and stranded 12 men on base. Tomoyuki Sugano struggled in the loss as he allowed seven runs in 3.1 innings of work.

The Orioles are sending right-hander Tyler Wells to the mound and he is making his 2025 debut after undergoing Tommy John surgery last year. Last season, he struggled as he only made three starts and was 0-2 with a 5.87 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP in 15.1 innings. This will be the first time in Wells’ career that he will be facing the Padres so it will be an interesting test.

The Padres were able to go 8-for-35 with a pair of walks and nine strikeouts at the plate as well. San Diego finished 3-for-14 with runners in scoring position while leaving nine men on base. David Morgan was used as an opener as he pitched two shutout innings without factoring into the decision.

Veteran righty Yu Darvish is going to be taking the mound for the Padres in this game and has been struggling as he is 3-4 with a 5.66 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP in 47.2 innings (10 starts).  He has limited the amount of hits against him as he has a .217 batting average against thus far. San Diego Padres ML (5 units)

Tyler Wells is a bit of a wild card, being his first start of the season coming off Tommy John surgery, while Yu Darvish is 2-1 with a 2.95 ERA and a .153 batting average against in 21.1 innings (four home starts) so far. There is a significant gap from the performance of these bullpens as the Orioles are 25th in the sport with a 4.66 reliever ERA, while the Padres are best in baseball with a 3.10 bullpen ERA this year. San Diego is the superior team this season so go with the San Diego Padres to win this game at home.

Over (4 units)

During their previous 13 games heading into this matchup, these teams are scoring well. Baltimore is averaging 4.46 runs per game in that stretch while San Diego is scoring 5.15 runs per game. When expanding that to the last 15 games, these teams are not killing rallies by hitting into double plays. The Orioles are tied with a handful of teams with 13 double plays hit into while the Padres are tied with three other teams for 18th place with 19 double plays committed. The over has hit in each of the previous three games against one another, so take the over to hit as well.
