The Boston Red Sox visit the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York, on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, for Game 1 of their American League Wild Card Series. First pitch is scheduled for 8:00 PM ET with national coverage on NBC. Boston finished the regular season 87-75 overall and an impressive 46-35 on the road, while New York went 93-68 overall and 46-34 at home. The Yankees finished second in the AL East, 4.5 games behind Tampa Bay, with Boston another 6.5 games back. Boston went 3-2 over its final five games despite closing with a 6-2 loss to the Cubs, while New York went 3-2 over its final five completed games. DraftKings has the Yankees at -155 on the moneyline and Boston at +128. The run line has Boston +1.5 at -186 and New York -1.5 at +153, while the total is 6.5 with Over 6.5 at -109 and Under 6.5 at -111. Starting Pitchers

Boston had not announced its Game 1 starter in the supplied matchup information when this preview was completed. New York is scheduled to start Cam Schlittler, although the provided Game 1 information does not list his 2026 win-loss record, ERA, WHIP or other season pitching statistics. That leaves an important piece of the matchup unresolved on Boston's side. The Red Sox nevertheless finished the regular season with excellent overall pitching numbers, while the Yankees were even better in several major categories. Boston's eventual starter announcement could affect both the moneyline and the unusually low 6.5 total.

Red Sox Bring Strong Road Numbers Into the Bronx

Boston finished 87-75 and was actually better away from Fenway Park than many playoff teams were on the road, going 46-35. The Red Sox also won three of their final five games. Their last five included a pair of extremely low-scoring victories, 2-0 and 1-0, along with a 4-3 win. Boston's regular season ended with a 6-2 loss to the Cubs, but the Red Sox enter October having demonstrated an ability to win close games.

The Red Sox hit .245 with 1,326 hits, 689 runs and 163 home runs this season. They finished with a .319 on-base percentage and .397 slugging percentage. Boston's pitching was the stronger part of its statistical profile, finishing with a 3.54 ERA and 1.23 WHIP while recording 1,398 strikeouts. Opposing hitters batted only .241 against Red Sox pitching.

Boston's clearest strength in this matchup is run prevention. The Red Sox allowed one run across three of their final four games before Sunday's loss and possess the type of season-long pitching numbers that can keep them competitive in a short playoff series. The offensive concern is power. Boston finished with 60 fewer home runs than New York, meaning the Red Sox may need to string hits together rather than depending on one swing to erase a deficit.

Yankees Combine Power With Elite Run Prevention

New York finished 93-68 and went 46-34 at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees won three of their final five completed games, scoring six or more runs in each victory. They beat Tampa Bay 9-2 and 6-4 before closing their completed regular-season schedule with a 6-3 victory over Baltimore. Their September 27 game against Baltimore was canceled.

The Yankees hit .235 with 1,250 hits and scored 739 runs, 50 more than Boston despite recording 76 fewer hits. Power explains much of that difference. New York hit 223 home runs compared with Boston's 163 and finished with a .409 slugging percentage. The Yankees also posted a .311 on-base percentage.

New York's pitching numbers were among the strongest in baseball. The Yankees finished with a 3.24 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 1,450 strikeouts while limiting opposing hitters to a .224 batting average. That gives New York an impressive combination for postseason baseball: a pitching staff capable of suppressing scoring and an offense capable of producing runs without needing multiple hits in an inning. Boston's road success deserves respect, but New York owns statistical advantages in both power and pitching.

Boston Red Sox vs New York Yankees Picks and Prediction

Pick: New York Yankees -155

Boston's 46-35 road record makes this more interesting than a typical home-favorite situation, but New York has the stronger complete statistical profile. The Yankees won six more games, hit 60 more home runs and own advantages in ERA, WHIP, strikeouts and opponent batting average. New York also went 46-34 at Yankee Stadium. The price has climbed from an opening -142 to -155, but it remains preferable to laying 1.5 runs in what could easily become a tight postseason game. I'll back the Yankees to take Game 1.

Pick: Over 6.5 (-109)

The pitching statistics make the under tempting, but 6.5 is an exceptionally low threshold for two AL East opponents with enough offensive capability to punish mistakes. New York scored 50 more runs than Boston and hit 223 home runs, while Boston finished with the better batting average and on-base percentage. A 4-3 game is enough to cash the over, and extra innings would remain another possibility if this stays tied through nine. With the market requiring fewer than seven runs, I'll take the over rather than ask both pitching staffs to be nearly perfect.

Final Picks: New York Yankees -155 and Over 6.5 (-109)
