By: Kim Smith Published 09/19/2026, 12:20 AM ET

The Boston Red Sox visit the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida, on Saturday, September 19, 2026. First pitch is scheduled for 4:10 PM ET with coverage on MLB.TV. Boston enters the weekend at 83-70 overall and 45-33 on the road, while Tampa Bay is 93-59 overall and an impressive 53-25 at home. The Rays lead the AL East, while Boston sits third in the division, 10.5 games back. These clubs have split their first 10 completed meetings of the season at five wins apiece, with Friday's series opener not yet completed at the time this preview was prepared. At the time of this writing the odds were not released. Be sure to check out our free MLB picks for more MLB predictions throughout the season.

Starting Pitchers

Boston is scheduled to start Payton Tolle, who enters at 9-6 with a 3.02 ERA and 1.07 WHIP through 143 innings. Tolle has allowed only 115 hits while recording 166 strikeouts against 38 walks and surrendering 15 home runs. Tampa Bay counters with Freddy Peralta, who is 9-11 with a 4.67 ERA and 1.34 WHIP through 158 innings. Peralta has allowed 153 hits and 23 home runs while striking out 146 and walking 58. The starting-pitching numbers create one of the clearest advantages in this matchup for Boston. Tolle owns the lower ERA by 1.65 runs, the lower WHIP by 0.27 and has 20 more strikeouts despite pitching 15 fewer innings. Tampa Bay has the better overall record, but Boston appears to have the stronger starting-pitching setup for Saturday.

Boston Has the Arm to Challenge the AL East Leaders

Boston comes into the weekend at 83-70 and has actually been slightly better on the road than its overall winning percentage might suggest, going 45-33 away from home. The Red Sox are 3-2 across their last five completed games, with wins of 5-1 and 4-1 over Kansas City and a 4-3 victory at Texas. Their two losses during that stretch came by scores of 4-2 and 7-3. Boston has therefore allowed just 16 runs across those five games while scoring 18, and the Red Sox enter this series after winning their most recent completed contest.

The Red Sox are batting .246 with 1,263 hits, 672 runs and 158 home runs this season. Boston owns a .321 on-base percentage and .401 slugging percentage. The pitching staff has been a significant part of the team's winning season, posting a 3.61 ERA and 1.24 WHIP with 1,324 strikeouts against 442 walks. Opponents are batting .242 against Boston pitching, giving the Red Sox a fairly balanced statistical profile entering this matchup.

Boston's most important advantage Saturday comes from the scheduled starting matchup. The Red Sox have already demonstrated that they can compete with Tampa Bay, splitting the first 10 completed meetings of the season, and their 45 road victories show they have been comfortable away from home. Boston doesn't have a major offensive statistical edge in this matchup, so preventing Tampa Bay from building an early lead becomes especially important. The combination of a 3.02 ERA and 1.07 WHIP from the scheduled starter gives the Red Sox a legitimate path to doing exactly that.

Tampa Bay Carries a Six-Game Winning Streak

Tampa Bay enters the weekend at 93-59 and owns one of baseball's strongest home records at 53-25. The Rays are also riding a six-game winning streak and have won all five of the completed games listed in their recent results. Tampa Bay swept three games from the Athletics by scores of 2-1, 4-3 and 10-1 after consecutive victories of 3-2 and 14-4 over Houston. The Rays outscored those opponents 33-11 across the five-game sample, with four of the five victories coming at Tropicana Field.

The Rays have also been the stronger offensive team over the full season. Tampa Bay is batting .260 with 1,328 hits, 698 runs and 162 home runs while producing a .329 on-base percentage and .406 slugging percentage. The pitching staff has a 3.73 ERA, but its 1.14 WHIP is excellent, and opponents are batting only .229. Tampa Bay has recorded 1,232 strikeouts against just 379 walks, showing strong control despite Boston owning the slightly better team ERA.

Tampa Bay's biggest advantage is the combination of offensive consistency, home performance and recent form. The Rays lead Boston in batting average, runs, hits, home runs, OBP and slugging percentage, while also allowing a substantially lower opponent batting average. Their 53-25 home record provides another major reason to be cautious about automatically siding with Boston simply because of the starting-pitching matchup. The concern for Tampa Bay is that its scheduled starter has a 4.67 ERA and 1.34 WHIP, which could give Boston opportunities to put pressure on the Rays before their overall pitching depth becomes a larger factor.

Boston Red Sox vs Tampa Bay Rays Picks and Prediction

Pick: Boston Red Sox Moneyline

Boston is the side I prefer if the eventual moneyline provides a reasonable price. Tampa Bay's 93-59 record, 53-25 home mark and six-game winning streak make the Rays extremely difficult to fade, but Saturday's starting-pitching matchup shifts enough value toward the visitor. Boston's scheduled starter carries a 3.02 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 166 strikeouts, compared with a 4.67 ERA and 1.34 WHIP for Tampa Bay's scheduled starter. Boston is also 45-33 on the road and has split the first 10 completed games against Tampa Bay this season. With ESPN's supplied matchup projection essentially even at 50.3% to 49.7%, the Red Sox offer an intriguing side if the market prices Tampa Bay as the clear favorite.

Pick: Under 8.5 or Higher

The Under 8.5 or higher is my preferred total target. Boston has allowed only 16 runs over its last five completed games, while Tampa Bay has surrendered just 11 over its last five. The Rays own a 1.14 team WHIP and .229 opponent batting average, while Boston counters with a 3.61 team ERA and a starter carrying a 3.02 ERA and 1.07 WHIP. Tampa Bay's offensive form creates some risk, especially after scoring 14 and 10 runs in two recent games, and its scheduled starter has been more vulnerable. Still, the overall pitching numbers and Boston's starting advantage make 8.5 a playable Under threshold. I would be considerably less interested if the market falls to 7.5.

Final Picks: Boston Red Sox Moneyline and Under 8.5 or Higher
