By: Kim Smith Published 09/18/2026, 12:00 AM ET

The Chicago Cubs visit the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati, Ohio, on Friday, September 18, 2026. First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 PM ET with coverage on MLB.TV. Chicago enters at 85-68 overall and 40-35 on the road, while Cincinnati is 71-81 overall and 37-40 at home. The Cubs have won seven of the first 10 meetings between these NL Central rivals this season and enter the series 10.5 games behind Milwaukee in the division. Cincinnati sits 24 games out of first place after snapping a two-game losing streak with a 6-2 victory over Los Angeles on Wednesday. At the time of this writing the odds were not released. Starting Pitchers

Chicago is scheduled to start Clay Holmes, who enters at 6-7 with a 2.85 ERA and 1.15 WHIP through 91.2 innings. He has allowed only 71 hits and six home runs while recording 71 strikeouts against 34 walks. Cincinnati counters with Chase Burns, who has put together an excellent 15-3 record with a 2.80 ERA and 1.15 WHIP through 151.1 innings. Burns has surrendered 120 hits and 16 home runs while striking out 181 and walking 54. There is very little separating the two starters by ERA or WHIP, but Burns owns the stronger strikeout profile and has worked nearly 60 more innings. Holmes has been particularly effective at limiting damage, however, allowing just six home runs in more than 90 innings. On the numbers provided, starting pitching is unlikely to be the area where either team has a substantial advantage.

Chicago Brings the More Complete Offensive Profile

Chicago enters the weekend series at 85-68 and has gone 3-2 over its last five games. The Cubs took two of three from Atlanta, sandwiching victories of 7-3 and 8-4 around a 6-3 defeat. Before that series, Chicago split its final two games against Pittsburgh, losing 4-3 before winning by the same score. The Cubs are 40-35 away from home and have already enjoyed considerable success against Cincinnati this season, winning seven of their first 10 head-to-head meetings. Chicago has also won three of the previous six games played in Cincinnati.

The Cubs have been significantly more productive offensively than the Reds. Chicago is batting .252 with 1,320 hits, 817 runs and 211 home runs while producing a .340 on-base percentage and .431 slugging percentage. The pitching staff carries a 4.19 ERA and 1.27 WHIP, with opponents batting .245. Chicago pitchers have issued 471 walks while recording 1,188 strikeouts. The Cubs have also performed well under the lights, entering this matchup with a 52-36 record in night games.

Chicago's biggest advantage is its ability to consistently generate offense. The Cubs have scored 186 more runs than Cincinnati despite the teams having played essentially the same number of games. Chicago also holds advantages of 22 points in batting average, 33 points in OBP and 35 points in slugging percentage. The pitching matchup may be close at the top, but the broader statistical profile favors a Cubs club that combines a much more productive lineup with better overall run prevention.

Cincinnati Needs Its Pitching to Keep This Close

Cincinnati comes into Friday at 71-81 after going 2-3 over its last five games. The Reds ended their series against Los Angeles with an encouraging 6-2 victory after dropping the first two games 4-1 and 4-0. Cincinnati also split its previous two completed games at Milwaukee, winning 4-3 before losing a high-scoring 13-9 contest. The Reds are 37-40 at Great American Ball Park and have struggled to string victories together recently, but Wednesday's performance demonstrated that they remain capable of beating one of the stronger teams on their schedule.

The Reds are hitting .230 with 1,161 hits, 631 runs and 202 home runs. Cincinnati owns a .307 on-base percentage and .396 slugging percentage. Its pitching staff has posted a 4.85 ERA and 1.45 WHIP while allowing opponents to bat .254. Reds pitchers have issued 632 walks and recorded 1,230 strikeouts. Cincinnati is also just 40-54 in night games, another notable contrast with Chicago's 52-36 mark.

The concern for Cincinnati is that its overall pitching numbers combine with an offense that has struggled to consistently produce runs. The Reds' 4.85 team ERA is 0.66 runs higher than Chicago's 4.19 mark, while their 1.45 WHIP is substantially worse than the Cubs' 1.27. Cincinnati does have an excellent starting pitching matchup on Friday, which could keep the game competitive through the early innings. Over a full nine innings, however, Chicago's advantages in batting average, OBP, slugging percentage, run production and overall pitching efficiency give the Cubs more paths to victory.

Chicago Cubs vs Cincinnati Reds Picks and Prediction

Pick: Chicago Cubs Moneyline

Chicago is the preferred side as long as the eventual moneyline remains reasonably priced. Cincinnati has the slightly better starting ERA at 2.80 compared with Chicago's 2.85, so there is little reason to expect a major early pitching advantage for either club. That pushes the handicap toward the overall team profiles, where Chicago has substantial advantages. The Cubs have scored 817 runs compared with Cincinnati's 631 and own the superior AVG, OBP and SLG while also carrying a much lower team ERA and WHIP. Add Chicago's 7-3 season-series advantage and 52-36 night record, and the Cubs have enough supporting advantages to back them on the moneyline rather than requiring a multi-run victory.

Pick: Under 8.5 or Higher

This is a matchup where the starting pitching deserves considerable weight. Both scheduled starters own WHIPs of 1.15, with ERAs of 2.85 and 2.80, and neither has been particularly vulnerable to home runs relative to his workload. Cincinnati's offense has scored only seven total runs across its last three completed games, including being shut out once, while Chicago has played several relatively modest-scoring games recently. The bullpens and Cincinnati's overall pitching numbers introduce some late-game risk, which makes a low total less attractive. If the market opens at 8.5 or higher, however, the Under provides enough room for the quality of the starting matchup to influence the result.
