Starting Pitchers

Kevin Gausman is expected to make his Cubs debut on Friday, while Kansas City had not announced its starting pitcher at the time of this preview. Gausman is 5-10 with a 4.38 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP through 127.1 innings. The right-hander has allowed 128 hits and 15 home runs while recording 127 strikeouts against 36 walks. Chicago acquired him from Toronto before the trade deadline and activated him ahead of this series.

Cubs Carry Momentum Into Kansas City

Chicago has won four of its last five completed games and brings a three-game winning streak into Friday. The Cubs recently swept the Dodgers at Wrigley Field, earning victories of 10-5, 5-1 and 7-6. Chicago split its previous two games against the Yankees, winning 5-2 before losing 2-1. The Cubs scored 28 runs and allowed 16 across those five contests.

The Cubs are batting .249 with a .339 on-base percentage and a .417 slugging percentage. Chicago has accumulated 983 hits, 143 home runs and 592 runs, averaging approximately 5.1 runs per game. Its pitching staff owns a 4.08 ERA, a 1.25 WHIP and a .244 opponent batting average, with 891 strikeouts against 339 walks.

Chicago’s ability to consistently reach base represents an important advantage in this matchup. The Cubs hold a 26-point advantage over Kansas City in on-base percentage and have scored 115 more runs. They have also displayed better recent offensive form, producing at least five runs in four of their last five games.

Gausman’s overall record is disappointing, but his control numbers remain encouraging. He has recorded exactly one strikeout per inning while issuing only 36 walks. The right-hander also finished his Toronto tenure with a strong outing before the trade, giving Chicago reason to believe he can provide immediate stability. Facing a Kansas City lineup averaging approximately 4.1 runs per game provides a reasonable opportunity for a successful Cubs debut.

Royals Return Home Following Consecutive Victories

Kansas City has gone 2-3 over its last five completed games and enters Friday at 48-67 overall. The Royals recently earned consecutive home victories over Minnesota by scores of 8-2 and 2-1. Those wins followed a difficult three-game series at Colorado in which Kansas City lost 8-1, 12-6 and 3-1. The Royals scored 18 runs while allowing 26 during that five-game stretch.

Kansas City is batting .245 with a .313 on-base percentage and a .398 slugging percentage. The Royals have collected 947 hits, 116 home runs and 477 runs. Their pitching staff carries a 4.81 ERA, a 1.42 WHIP and a .260 opponent batting average. Kansas City pitchers have recorded 855 strikeouts while issuing 428 walks.

The Royals have shown signs of improvement after returning home. They limited Minnesota to three combined runs across two victories, including a strong 2-1 performance in their most recent completed game. Kansas City is also 28-27 at Kauffman Stadium, compared with a 20-40 road record.

However, the season-long pitching numbers remain a major concern. The Royals have allowed more baserunners, issued 89 more walks and surrendered a considerably higher opponent batting average than Chicago. Kansas City’s unannounced starter will also be asked to contain a Cubs lineup that scored 22 runs during its three-game sweep of Los Angeles.

Chicago Cubs vs Kansas City Royals Picks and Prediction

  • Pick: Chicago Cubs -1.5

I am taking Chicago on the run line if the price is reasonable. The Cubs own the better overall record, the stronger offense and substantial season-long pitching advantages. Chicago has scored 115 more runs while carrying a team ERA that is 0.73 lower than Kansas City’s mark.

The Cubs have won three consecutive games and scored at least five runs in four of their last five appearances. Kansas City’s two recent victories deserve respect, but the Royals lost the previous three games by two, six and seven runs. Their 4.81 ERA and 1.42 WHIP create a difficult matchup against a Chicago lineup reaching base at a .339 rate.

Kansas City’s unconfirmed starter prevents this from becoming a maximum-confidence selection. However, Chicago possesses enough offensive depth to pressure both the starter and bullpen. Gausman should also benefit from facing a lineup that has scored three runs or fewer in four of its last five games. I prefer Chicago -1.5 over paying what could become an expensive moneyline price.

  • Pick: Over 8.5

I lean over if the total is set at 8.5. Chicago is averaging more than five runs per game and recently scored 28 runs across five contests. Kansas City’s pitching staff owns a 4.81 ERA, while its .260 opponent batting average and 1.42 WHIP indicate that Chicago should receive consistent scoring opportunities.

The Royals’ offensive contribution is less certain, particularly with Gausman starting for the Cubs. However, Gausman owns a 4.38 ERA and has allowed 128 hits through 127.1 innings. Kansas City scored 14 runs across its two recent wins and has performed considerably better at home than on the road.

The unannounced Kansas City starter adds further volatility to the matchup. I would play over 8.5, consider over nine at reduced confidence and pass if the market opens at 9.5 or higher. My projected score is Chicago 6, Kansas City 4.
