Starting Pitchers

Chicago will send Matthew Boyd to the mound against Kansas City's Randy Dobnak. Boyd enters with a 7-1 record, 3.59 ERA and 1.22 WHIP through 72.2 innings. The left-hander has allowed 69 hits and eight home runs while striking out 63 and walking 20. Dobnak has been excellent in limited work, entering at 2-0 with a 1.16 ERA and 1.19 WHIP across 31.0 innings. The Royals right-hander has allowed 24 hits and two home runs while recording 15 strikeouts against 13 walks.

Chicago Brings a Five-Game Winning Streak

The Cubs enter Sunday's matchup at 68-49 overall and 33-25 on the road. Chicago has won five consecutive games, including Friday's 6-4 victory over Kansas City. Before opening this series, the Cubs defeated Toronto 3-2 in 11 innings and swept three games from the Dodgers by scores of 7-6, 5-1 and 10-5.

Chicago is batting .248 this season with 601 runs, 997 hits and 145 home runs. The Cubs have produced a .339 on-base percentage and .415 slugging percentage. Their pitching staff owns a 4.05 ERA and 1.25 WHIP, while opponents are batting .244. Chicago pitchers have recorded 905 strikeouts while issuing 345 walks.

Run production provides Chicago with one of the clearest advantages in this matchup. The Cubs have scored 117 more runs than Kansas City this season and have also hit 28 more home runs. Their .339 on-base percentage gives them another significant edge over a Royals pitching staff carrying a 4.82 ERA and 1.42 WHIP. Chicago enters this matchup with the combination of strong recent form and superior season-long offensive production.

Kansas City Needs Its Pitching to Slow Chicago

Kansas City enters Sunday's series finale at 48-69 overall with a 28-29 record at Kauffman Stadium. The Royals are 2-3 over their last five completed games and have lost their last two. Kansas City fell 6-4 against Chicago on Friday after losing 4-3 to Minnesota. Before those defeats, the Royals defeated the Twins 2-1 and 8-2 after suffering an 8-1 loss at Colorado.

The Royals are batting .245 with 484 runs, 961 hits and 117 home runs. Kansas City has a .312 on-base percentage and .396 slugging percentage. The pitching staff has struggled considerably more, posting a 4.82 ERA and 1.42 WHIP while opponents are batting .260. Royals pitchers have recorded 864 strikeouts against 440 walks.

Dobnak gives Kansas City a chance to overcome some of those season-long pitching problems. His 1.16 ERA is excellent, although it has come across only 31 innings. His 15 strikeouts against 13 walks also suggest his ERA alone doesn't tell the entire story. Facing a Cubs lineup that has scored 601 runs and enters on a five-game winning streak represents a difficult test.

Chicago Cubs vs Kansas City Royals Picks and Prediction

  • Pick: Chicago Cubs Moneyline

The Chicago Cubs are the pick to win Sunday's game.

Kansas City has the starter with the lower ERA, but Chicago has several advantages surrounding the pitching matchup. The Cubs are 19 games above .500 while the Royals are 21 games below .500, and Chicago has been a winning team on the road.

The offensive comparison is even more convincing. Chicago has scored 601 runs compared with Kansas City's 484 and owns advantages in home runs, on-base percentage and slugging percentage. The Royals' 4.82 team ERA and 1.42 WHIP also create opportunities for Chicago once Dobnak leaves the game.

Boyd gives the Cubs a reliable option on the other side with his 7-1 record, 3.59 ERA and 1.22 WHIP. ESPN Analytics also favors Chicago with a 56.6% win probability.

Take the Chicago Cubs to win.

  • Pick: Over 8.5

The over is the preferred total if the number is set at 8.5.

Chicago has been one of the more productive offenses in this matchup, and Kansas City's season pitching statistics are difficult to trust. The Royals have allowed opponents to bat .260 while producing a 4.82 ERA and 1.42 WHIP.

Dobnak could keep Chicago relatively quiet early, but his limited innings and nearly even strikeout-to-walk totals make it difficult to assume his 1.16 ERA will completely shut down the Cubs. Kansas City also has a path toward contributing against Boyd, whose 3.59 ERA is solid without being overpowering.

Chicago has scored at least five runs in four of its last five completed games, including six against Kansas City on Friday. With the Cubs capable of doing much of the scoring themselves, 8.5 is playable to the over.

Take the over if the total is set at 8.5.

Prediction: Chicago Cubs 6, Kansas City Royals 4
