Chicago enters the matchup at 80-62 overall and 39-31 on the road, while Miami is 71-71 overall and 42-28 at home. Starting Pitchers

Chicago is scheduled to start Matthew Boyd, who enters at 8-3 with a 4.05 ERA and 1.23 WHIP through 102.1 innings. Boyd has allowed 95 hits and 31 walks while recording 79 strikeouts and surrendering 15 home runs. Miami counters with Tyler Phillips, who is 4-6 with a 3.43 ERA and 1.33 WHIP through 110.1 innings. Phillips has allowed 100 hits and 47 walks while striking out 90 and giving up 14 home runs. Miami owns the ERA advantage, but Chicago's starter has the better WHIP and has issued considerably fewer walks.

Chicago Brings the More Dangerous Offense

Chicago enters Sunday at 80-62 and has been solid away from home with a 39-31 road record. The Cubs have won three of their last five completed games, including Friday's 6-1 victory over Miami and a 2-1 win over Milwaukee immediately before this series. Chicago also produced a 17-3 victory during that recent stretch, showing the kind of offensive ceiling this team can reach when the lineup gets rolling. The Cubs remain comfortably above .500 and continue to hold second place in the NL Central.

The Cubs are batting .251 with 1,229 hits, 759 runs and 199 home runs. Chicago also owns a .339 on-base percentage and .431 slugging percentage, giving it clear advantages over Miami in nearly every major offensive category supplied. The Cubs have scored 143 more runs and hit 55 more home runs than the Marlins while also posting the better batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage. That is a substantial offensive gap and gives Chicago multiple ways to create separation.

Chicago's pitching staff owns a 4.16 team ERA and 1.26 WHIP while opponents are batting .244. Those numbers are not quite as strong as Miami's in ERA and opponent average, but the Cubs combine competent run prevention with one of the stronger offensive profiles in this matchup. Sunday's starter also carries a solid 1.23 WHIP, which gives Chicago a chance to control traffic on the bases and keep pressure on Miami's offense.

Miami Relies on Home Success and Pitching

Miami enters Sunday at 71-71 overall but has been much stronger at loanDepot park, where the Marlins are 42-28. They have lost three of their last five completed games, including Friday's 6-1 setback against Chicago, but they also earned back-to-back victories over Kansas City earlier in the week. Miami's home record is one of the biggest reasons this matchup remains competitive despite Chicago's stronger overall season profile.

The Marlins are batting .247 with 1,166 hits, 616 runs and 144 home runs. Miami owns a .325 on-base percentage and .398 slugging percentage. Those numbers are respectable, but they trail Chicago in every major offensive category supplied. The largest difference is power, with the Cubs holding a 55-home-run advantage, while the 143-run gap also shows how much more consistently Chicago has converted opportunities into production.

Miami does own the slightly better overall pitching numbers. The Marlins carry a 3.97 team ERA and 1.26 WHIP while holding opponents to a .232 batting average. Chicago's corresponding numbers are 4.16, 1.26 and .244. Miami's scheduled starter also owns the lower ERA at 3.43, although the higher WHIP and walk total create some concern against a Chicago offense that has consistently generated more baserunners and power.

Chicago Cubs vs Miami Marlins Picks and Prediction

Pick: Chicago Cubs Moneyline

Chicago is the preferred side for Sunday's matchup. Miami's 42-28 home record and slightly better overall pitching numbers deserve respect, but the Cubs hold a major offensive advantage and enter with the better overall record. Chicago has scored 143 more runs, hit 55 more home runs and owns the superior batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage. The Cubs also won the opening game of the series 6-1 and have taken three of their last five completed games. With ESPN's matchup model also leaning Chicago, the Cubs moneyline is the stronger side once a reasonable price becomes available.

Pick: Over 8.5

Over 8.5 is the preferred target number. Chicago has one of the more productive offensive profiles in the matchup with 759 runs, 199 home runs and a .431 slugging percentage. Miami's starter has a solid 3.43 ERA, but his 1.33 WHIP and 47 walks provide opportunities for a patient Chicago lineup to create traffic. On the other side, Chicago's starter carries a 4.05 ERA, so Miami has a realistic path to contributing enough offense at home. With Chicago's power advantage and both teams capable of creating scoring chances, the Over is the better lean at 8.5.

Final Picks: Chicago Cubs Moneyline and Over 8.5
