Starting Pitchers

Davis Martin is expected to start for Chicago with a 9-5 record, a 3.62 ERA, and 106 strikeouts this season. The right-hander has provided the White Sox with consistent work and enters Tuesday with a strong combination of victories and run prevention. Boston is expected to counter with Patrick Sandoval, who owns a 3.32 ERA over his first four starts of the season. The left-hander has completed 19 innings while recording 20 strikeouts, although his 1.58 WHIP indicates that opposing teams have frequently put runners on base.

Chicago Carries a Balanced Attack into Fenway Park

The White Sox enter Tuesday with a 59-52 overall record after taking two of three games from Tampa Bay. Chicago dropped the middle game of that series by a 1-0 score but responded impressively Sunday, earning a 9-1 victory to secure the series. The White Sox have remained at the top of the American League Central and arrive in Boston having won three of their final five games before Monday.

Chicago is batting .238 as a team with 531 runs, 886 hits, and 146 home runs. The White Sox have recorded a .316 on-base percentage and a .408 slugging percentage. Their batting average is modest, but the combination of power and scoring production has made the lineup dangerous. Chicago enters the matchup with 57 more runs and 35 more home runs than Boston, giving the visiting club a clear statistical advantage in those offensive categories.

The White Sox must continue converting their power into runs against a left-handed starter who has pitched reasonably well since joining Boston’s rotation. Sandoval has allowed traffic, however, and Chicago’s lineup should have opportunities if it remains patient. The White Sox also possess the more established starter in this matchup. Martin’s 3.62 ERA and 9-5 record give Chicago a dependable option after its pitching staff held Tampa Bay to only one run Sunday.

Boston Returns Home Riding a Powerful Winning Streak

Boston comes into Tuesday with a 60-51 overall record after completing an impressive three-game road sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Red Sox won Sunday’s series finale 8-4 after taking the first two games of the weekend. Boston has won five consecutive games and five of its last five.

The Red Sox are batting .244 with 474 runs, 903 hits, and 111 home runs. Boston has produced a .316 on-base percentage and a .396 slugging percentage. The Red Sox own the better team batting average and have collected more hits than Chicago, but their power and scoring totals trail the visitors. Boston demonstrated its home-run potential Sunday by hitting four long balls during the victory over Los Angeles.

Recent form is the most compelling reason to support Boston. The Red Sox have won 28 of their last 33 games and now return to Fenway Park after sweeping one of the league’s stronger clubs on the road. Their lineup has generated eight runs in two out of the last three games, showing considerably more explosiveness than the season-long numbers suggest. The challenge will be maintaining that momentum against Martin, whose record and ERA make him a more difficult assignment than several pitchers Boston encountered during its recent surge.

Chicago White Sox vs Boston Red Sox Picks and Prediction

Pick:

  • Chicago White Sox +1.5

I am taking Chicago on the run line because the White Sox have the more dependable starting pitcher and the stronger season-long power numbers. Martin enters with a 9-5 record and a 3.62 ERA, while Sandoval has completed only four starts and carries a 1.58 WHIP. Boston’s tremendous recent form makes it difficult to oppose the home team outright, but Chicago has won 59 games, leads its division, and has scored 57 more runs than the Red Sox. The combination of Chicago’s power and starting-pitching advantage makes the White Sox +1.5 the safer side in what could be a tightly contested game.

Pick:

  • Over 8.5

I am leaning over if the total is set at 8.5 runs. Boston scored eight runs in each of its final two games against Los Angeles and hit four home runs Sunday. Chicago also produced nine runs in its most recent contest and has hit 146 home runs this season. Martin could slow Boston during the early innings, but the Red Sox are one of the hottest teams in baseball and have repeatedly found ways to create late scoring. Sandoval’s elevated WHIP also gives Chicago an opportunity to generate traffic and contribute its share. I would play Over 8.5, while a move to 9.5 would remove much of the available value.
