Sox finish season strong

After spending most of the 2025 season fighting to avoid the title of worst team in pro baseball, the White Sox (57-90) have suddenly started to shine. The Sox have gone 9-3 since August 31 and going into Friday's 4-0 loss to Cleveland, only Baltimore had a better record in September. Chicago has won all of its last three series, most recently taking two out of three against the Rays to sink their postseason hopes, and the team could do the same to the Guardians with another big weekend performance in Ohio.

Davis Martin will get the start for the White Sox on Saturday. The right-hander has gone 6-9 with a 4.03 ERA in 23 appearances  (22 starts) this year, striking out 92 batters in 127.1 innings. Martin's last start was against the Tigers, whom he held to four runs (two earned) in 5.1 innings to help set up another Sox win. He was a 14th-round pick for the Sox back in 2018 and made his MLB debut in 2022 before missing almost the entire 2023 season due to Tommy John surgery.

Guardians make late playoff surge

The Guardians (76-71) looked to have missed the boat on the postseason after a disastrous 2-10 run in August. But they have rallied since and remain in the chase, though there is still a lot of ground to make up. With 15 games remaining on their regular season schedule, the Guardians are 3.0 games out of the final AL Wild Card position, currently occupied by the Mariners. Cleveland is now 8-2 in its last 10 games after the opener against the Sox, fired by an exceptional night for Tanner Bibee. The pitcher threw his first-ever complete game shutout, striking out 10 White Sox batters while holding them to two singles and zero walks.

Rookie Parker Messick will be on the mound Saturday to start. The lefty has been a revelation so far for Cleveland, going 2-0 with a 1.93 ERA in his first four MLB starts. In his last outing, Messick shackled the Rays over 6.0 innings, giving up a single run to take the W. A relatively soft thrower - his fastball averages 92.4 mph - he has excelled with his command and in inducing soft contact. Messick has given up just five EBHs and a single homer in 23.1 innings while working to a fantastic walk rate of 1.16 BB/9.

White Sox vs. Guardians pick

Spread Pick for White Sox vs. Guardians

  • White Sox +1.5 (5 units)

Guardians games tend to be decided by razor-thin margins and with the White Sox's current hot streak in mind, I am backing them to cover the runline as underdog on Saturday. Four of Cleveland's last six games going into Friday's series opener had finished with a one-run winning margin, while the White Sox have been involved in 44 one-run games this season, losing an AL-high 31. The Sox are 10-2 on the runline going back to August 31 and 43-28 on the runline this season playing as away underdogs. Cleveland has gone 18-27 on the runline as home favorite.

Take the White Sox on the runline.

Over/under Pick for White Sox vs. Guardians

  • Under (5 units)

These are two of the worst offenses in pro baseball this year and they should struggle to put up a big score in a pitcher-friendly ballpark. The White Sox and Guardians rank 27th and 29th in MLB on OPS at .683 and .665, respectively. Cleveland has hit 69 home runs this year in front of its fans at a rate of less than one per game. The Guardians are 65-74-1 on the over this season and 16-23-1 against AL Central rivals.

Take the under.
