Starting Pitchers

Cincinnati is expected to start Brady Singer, who comes in at 5-11 with a 4.72 ERA and 1.42 WHIP over 131.2 innings. He has allowed 144 hits and 25 home runs while striking out 107 and walking 43. San Francisco counters with Landen Roupp, who is 7-13 with a 4.34 ERA and 1.31 WHIP through 134.2 innings. Roupp has surrendered 113 hits and only 10 home runs while recording 130 strikeouts and 64 walks. Roupp owns the better ERA, WHIP, strikeout total and home-run prevention numbers entering this matchup.

Reds Need More Consistency on the Road

Cincinnati enters at 62-69 overall with a respectable 30-33 road record, but the Reds have struggled to string together positive results lately. They are 2-3 over their last five games, with losses by scores of 5-3, 9-0 and 10-9 surrounding victories of 11-5 and 5-4. Their recent results show considerable volatility, ranging from a shutout loss to an 11-run offensive performance.

The Reds are batting .227 as a team with 986 hits, 537 runs and 169 home runs. They own a .307 on-base percentage and .392 slugging percentage. Power has been one of the brighter parts of the Cincinnati profile, with the Reds holding a clear home-run advantage over San Francisco despite trailing significantly in batting average and hits.

Pitching has been more problematic. Cincinnati has a 4.52 team ERA and 1.41 WHIP while opponents are batting .248. That puts additional pressure on the offense, especially in a matchup where the starting pitching numbers favor San Francisco. Cincinnati has shown that it can produce runs in bunches, but the lack of consistent baserunners and run prevention remain concerns.

Giants Trying to End Four-Game Skid

San Francisco comes into Tuesday at 52-78 overall and 29-33 at Oracle Park. The Giants have dropped four consecutive games, losing 5-4, 3-2, 6-4 and 5-2 after their most recent victory came by a 1-0 score. Three of those four defeats came by two runs or fewer, so San Francisco has been competitive even while failing to finish games.

The Giants are batting .247 with 1,090 hits, 523 runs and 144 home runs. They have a .305 on-base percentage and .404 slugging percentage. San Francisco has the better batting average, more hits and higher slugging percentage in this matchup, but Cincinnati has generated more total runs and more home-run production.

San Francisco has also been slightly better on the mound, carrying a 4.36 ERA and 1.36 WHIP compared with Cincinnati's 4.52 ERA and 1.41 WHIP. Opponents are batting .248 against both pitching staffs. The Giants' clearest advantage comes with the scheduled starter, whose 4.34 ERA and 1.31 WHIP are both better than the corresponding marks on the Cincinnati side.

Cincinnati Reds vs San Francisco Giants Picks and Prediction

Pick: San Francisco Giants Moneyline

Neither team enters in particularly impressive form, but San Francisco has the better starting-pitching profile and a few important statistical advantages. The Giants are hitting .247 compared with Cincinnati's .227 and have recorded more than 100 additional hits this season. Their scheduled starter also owns the lower ERA and WHIP while allowing dramatically fewer home runs. Cincinnati's power gives it upset potential, but the overall matchup points slightly toward San Francisco at home. The Giants are the moneyline pick.

Pick: Under 8.5

The total is more difficult because both pitching staffs have season ERAs above 4.30, but Oracle Park combined with the offensive inconsistency on both sides makes the Under attractive at the right number. Cincinnati has been shut out once over its last five games, while San Francisco scored four runs or fewer in each of its last five. The Giants' scheduled starter has also allowed only 10 home runs in 134.2 innings. Take the Under if the total is set at 8.5.
