The Cleveland Guardians and Baltimore Orioles open a three-game series Monday afternoon at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland. First pitch is scheduled for 1:35 PM ET on September 7 with MLB.TV carrying the game. Cleveland enters at 72-71 overall and 37-32 on the road, while Baltimore is 69-74 overall and 34-37 at home. The Guardians sit second in the AL Central, 2.5 games behind Chicago, while the Orioles are fifth in the AL East, 16.5 games behind Tampa Bay. Cleveland has won three of four meetings between these teams this season, but both clubs enter Monday coming off losses. ESPN Analytics gives Baltimore a 58.1% chance of winning compared with 41.9% for Cleveland. At the time of this writing the odds were not released. Starting Pitchers

Cleveland is scheduled to start Joey Cantillo, who enters at 9-8 with a 3.81 ERA and 1.48 WHIP through 141.2 innings. Cantillo has allowed 137 hits and 72 walks while recording 151 strikeouts and surrendering 16 home runs. Baltimore counters with Trevor Rogers, who is 9-9 with a 4.30 ERA and 1.23 WHIP through 144.1 innings. Rogers has allowed 141 hits and only 37 walks while striking out 132 and giving up 16 home runs. Cleveland owns the ERA advantage, but Baltimore has a significant WHIP and control advantage in the starting matchup.

Cleveland Needs Its Pitching to Lead the Way

Cleveland enters Monday at 72-71 overall and 37-32 on the road. The Guardians have lost three of their last five completed games, including Saturday's 6-0 home defeat against Detroit. Cleveland did win consecutive games immediately before that loss, beating Detroit 7-6 and 4-3 in 10 innings. The Guardians have been more dependable on the road than Baltimore has been at home, and they have also controlled this season's head-to-head series with three victories in four meetings.

The Guardians are batting .236 with 1,123 hits, 577 runs and 133 home runs while carrying a .314 on-base percentage and .371 slugging percentage. Those numbers highlight the biggest weakness in Cleveland's profile. Baltimore has scored 63 more runs and hit 39 more home runs while also owning small advantages in on-base percentage and slugging percentage. Cleveland has scored only 14 runs across its last five completed games and has been shut out twice during that stretch, making offensive consistency a significant concern entering Monday.

Cleveland's pitching staff gives the Guardians their clearest path to victory. They own a 3.76 team ERA and 1.26 WHIP while opponents are batting .238. All three numbers are substantially better than Baltimore's 4.16 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and .254 opponent batting average. Cleveland's scheduled starter also enters with a 3.81 ERA, although his 1.48 WHIP and 72 walks create some concern against an Orioles offense with more power. If the Guardians can limit free baserunners, their overall pitching advantage gives them an opportunity to overcome the offensive disparity.

Baltimore Looks to End a Five-Game Slide

Baltimore enters Monday at 69-74 overall and 34-37 at Camden Yards. The Orioles have lost five consecutive games, including back-to-back shutout defeats against Boston by scores of 1-0 and 5-0. Baltimore has scored only seven total runs during its five-game losing streak and has not scored at all in its last two completed games. The Orioles return for another home series needing an immediate offensive response after a difficult stretch that has dropped them five games below .500.

Baltimore is batting .234 with 1,116 hits, 640 runs and 172 home runs while posting a .316 on-base percentage and .394 slugging percentage. The Orioles have the more productive season-long offense in this matchup despite owning a slightly lower batting average. Their 63-run advantage is significant, while the 39-home-run edge gives Baltimore considerably more power potential. The problem is translating those season numbers into current production. An offense that has generated 640 runs on the season has managed two runs or fewer in four of its last five completed games.

The Orioles have also been weaker on the mound over the full season, carrying a 4.16 ERA and 1.34 WHIP while opponents are batting .254. Monday's scheduled starter provides Baltimore with one important advantage, however, as his 1.23 WHIP is considerably better than Cleveland's scheduled starter's 1.48 mark. He has also issued only 37 walks through 144.1 innings, which could become especially valuable against a Cleveland offense that has struggled to score recently. Baltimore's recent form is difficult to trust, but the starting matchup and superior power numbers give the Orioles a chance to stop the losing streak.

Cleveland Guardians vs Baltimore Orioles Picks and Prediction

Pick: Cleveland Guardians Moneyline

Cleveland is the preferred side despite ESPN Analytics favoring Baltimore. The Guardians own the better overall record, the better road record compared with Baltimore's home mark, and a 3-1 advantage in the season series. More importantly, Cleveland has the stronger overall pitching profile with a 3.76 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and .238 opponent batting average compared with Baltimore's 4.16 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and .254 opponent average. Baltimore's power advantage is meaningful, but the Orioles enter Monday on a five-game losing streak and have scored only seven runs during that stretch. With Cleveland holding the season-long pitching advantage and Baltimore's offense struggling badly, the Guardians moneyline is the preferred play.

Pick: Under 8.5

Under 8.5 is the preferred target number for Monday afternoon. Baltimore has been shut out in consecutive games and has scored only seven runs across its last five, while Cleveland has scored just 14 during its own five-game stretch and was shut out Saturday. The Guardians' 3.76 team ERA strengthens the Under case, and Baltimore's scheduled starter has a solid 1.23 WHIP with only 37 walks through 144.1 innings. Neither offense enters this matchup in dependable scoring form, making Under 8.5 the strongest total position if that number is available.
