The Cleveland Guardians visit the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts, on Wednesday, September 23, 2026. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM ET with national coverage on ESPN. Cleveland enters at 81-75 overall and 40-35 on the road, while Boston is 84-72 overall and 38-37 at home. The Guardians entered this series riding a five-game winning streak and holding a one-game lead in the AL Central, while Boston entered on a two-game losing streak and sits third in the AL East. Boston won two of the first three completed meetings between these teams this season before the current series began. At the time of this writing the odds were not released. Starting Pitchers

Cleveland is scheduled to start Foster Griffin, who enters at 15-5 with a 3.67 ERA and 1.19 WHIP through 166.2 innings. He has allowed 154 hits and 23 home runs while recording 151 strikeouts against 45 walks. Boston counters with Sonny Gray, who has put together a 17-5 record with a 2.82 ERA and 1.16 WHIP through 163 innings. He has surrendered 144 hits and 16 home runs while striking out 146 and walking 45. Both starters have delivered strong seasons, but Gray owns the statistical advantage with the lower ERA, slightly better WHIP and fewer home runs allowed. Griffin has worked slightly more innings and recorded five more strikeouts, giving Wednesday's matchup two established starters capable of working deep into the game.

Cleveland Carries a Five-Game Winning Streak

Cleveland comes into Wednesday at 81-75 and has played winning baseball away from home with a 40-35 road record. More importantly, the Guardians entered this series as one of the hotter teams in the American League. Cleveland won each of its five most recently completed games, sweeping three against the Athletics after taking two straight from the White Sox. The Guardians outscored those opponents 31-18 over the five victories, including a 1-0 shutout in their most recent completed game. That run pushed Cleveland into first place in the AL Central, one game ahead of Chicago.

The Guardians are batting .238 with 649 runs, 1,238 hits and 152 home runs. They own a .315 on-base percentage and .377 slugging percentage, numbers that show an offense that has not been especially powerful over the full season. Cleveland's pitching has been much stronger, posting a 3.78 ERA and 1.26 WHIP while holding opposing hitters to a .236 batting average. The staff has accumulated an impressive 1,476 strikeouts against 513 walks.

Cleveland's biggest strength entering Wednesday is its ability to remain competitive without requiring huge offensive production. The Guardians have the lower batting average, OBP and slugging percentage in this matchup, but their pitching staff has given them opportunities to win close games throughout the season. That was evident in the 1-0 victory that completed the sweep of the Athletics. Wednesday presents a more difficult pitching matchup, however, and Cleveland cannot count on generating the same offensive opportunities it found during portions of its five-game winning streak.

Boston Looks for a Home Rebound

Boston enters Wednesday at 84-72 overall and 38-37 at Fenway Park. The Red Sox went 2-3 across their five most recently completed games, losing 5-1 and 2-1 to Tampa Bay after opening that series with a 4-2 victory. Before visiting Tampa Bay, Boston split its final two listed games at Texas, winning 4-3 after suffering a 7-3 loss. The Red Sox scored only 13 runs across those five contests, including just two total runs in their final two games against Tampa Bay.

Boston has produced slightly better offensive numbers than Cleveland over the full season, batting .246 with 678 runs, 1,286 hits and 161 home runs. The Red Sox own a .320 on-base percentage and .401 slugging percentage. Their pitching has also been excellent, carrying a 3.59 ERA and 1.24 WHIP while limiting opponents to a .241 batting average. Boston has recorded 1,352 strikeouts against 453 walks.

The Red Sox have a small but noticeable statistical advantage on both sides of the matchup. Boston has scored 29 more runs than Cleveland while producing the better batting average, OBP and slugging percentage, and its pitching staff owns the lower ERA and WHIP. The biggest question is whether the offense can rebound after being held to one run in consecutive games. Boston's Wednesday pitching situation gives it a chance to win without needing a major offensive breakout, but the Red Sox will be facing a Cleveland club that arrived in Boston playing its best baseball of September.

Cleveland Guardians vs Boston Red Sox Picks and Prediction

Pick: Boston Red Sox Moneyline

Boston is the side to back if the eventual moneyline remains within a reasonable range. Cleveland's five-game winning streak makes the Guardians dangerous, but the Red Sox hold several important statistical advantages and have the stronger starting-pitching numbers for Wednesday. Boston's scheduled starter enters with a 2.82 ERA and 1.16 WHIP compared with Cleveland's 3.67 ERA and 1.19 WHIP, while allowing seven fewer home runs in nearly the same workload. The Red Sox also own the better team ERA, WHIP, batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage. Cleveland's recent form keeps this from being an easy matchup, but Boston has the better overall statistical profile and the starting-pitching advantage at Fenway Park.

Pick: Under 8.5 or Higher

The under is the preferred total if sportsbooks open this matchup at 8.5 or higher. Both teams have relied heavily on pitching, with Boston carrying a 3.59 team ERA and Cleveland sitting at 3.78. Wednesday's scheduled starters have combined for 32 wins and both own WHIPs below 1.20. Cleveland's most recently completed game finished 1-0, while Boston's previous two games produced final scores of 5-1 and 2-1. The Red Sox scored only 13 runs over their last five completed games, and Cleveland's season-long offensive numbers remain modest despite its recent winning streak. Fenway Park always introduces some scoring potential, but the starting matchup and the season-long pitching numbers make an 8.5 total high enough to favor the under.

Final Picks: Boston Red Sox Moneyline and Under 8.5 or Higher
