The Cleveland Guardians open an important American League Central series against the Chicago White Sox at Rate Field in Chicago, Illinois, on Friday, August 7. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:40 p.m. ET, with television coverage available on MLB.TV, CHSN and CLEG. Cleveland enters the matchup at 57-58 overall and 29-28 on the road, while Chicago is 59-54 overall and 34-21 at home. At the time of this writing the odds were not released. Starting Pitchers

Parker Messick is scheduled to start for Cleveland against Chicago’s Noah Schultz. Messick is 8-6 with a 2.57 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP through 129.2 innings. The left-hander has allowed 100 hits and 11 home runs while recording 128 strikeouts against 37 walks. Schultz is 3-8 with a 5.82 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP across 65 innings. He has surrendered 59 hits and nine home runs while striking out 58 and walking 31.

Guardians Rely on Messick to Stop Their Slide

Cleveland has gone 1-4 over its last five completed games and enters Friday at 57-58 overall. The Guardians recently dropped consecutive home games against the Mets, losing 6-5 in 10 innings after suffering a 6-2 defeat. Cleveland earned a 5-0 victory over Arizona before those losses, but that result followed defeats of 12-8 and 4-1 against the Diamondbacks. The Guardians scored 21 runs while allowing 28 across those five contests.

Cleveland is batting .231 with 453 runs, 881 hits and 109 home runs this season. The Guardians own a .311 on-base percentage and a .369 slugging percentage. Their pitching staff has been considerably more dependable, carrying a 3.75 ERA, a 1.26 WHIP and a .238 opponent batting average. Cleveland pitchers have issued 372 walks while recording 1,066 strikeouts.

The Guardians’ pitching gives them a chance to remain competitive, but their lineup continues to provide a limited margin for error. Cleveland has the lower batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage in this matchup. The Guardians have scored three runs or fewer in three of their last five games, and their 109 home runs rank well behind Chicago’s total.

Messick provides Cleveland with its clearest advantage. He has allowed only 137 combined hits and walks through 129.2 innings and has surrendered fewer than one home run per 11 innings. Cleveland needs him to work deep into the game after its bullpen was forced to cover additional innings during Wednesday’s extra-inning loss.

White Sox Look to Protect Their AL Central Lead

Chicago has gone 2-3 over its last five completed games, leaving the White Sox at 59-54 overall. Chicago recently lost consecutive games at Boston by scores of 4-0 and 14-2. Those defeats followed a 9-1 victory at Tampa Bay. The White Sox split the first two games of that series, earning a 6-1 win before losing 1-0. Chicago scored 17 runs while allowing 21 across those five contests.

The White Sox are batting .238 with 533 runs, 896 hits and 146 home runs. Chicago has produced a .316 on-base percentage and a .406 slugging percentage. Its pitching staff owns a 4.09 ERA, a 1.30 WHIP and a .238 opponent batting average, with 956 strikeouts and 409 walks. The White Sox have scored 85 more runs than Cleveland while hitting 37 additional home runs.

Chicago’s biggest advantage is its ability to generate extra-base damage. The White Sox have produced substantially more power than the Guardians, helping them average approximately 4.7 runs per game. Cleveland is averaging fewer than four runs, placing significantly more pressure on its pitching staff.

The concern is Schultz’s inability to consistently control games. He has allowed 90 combined hits and walks through 65 innings and owns a 5.82 ERA. The White Sox have the stronger offense and an excellent home record, but those advantages could be neutralized if Schultz allows Cleveland to establish an early lead.

Cleveland Guardians vs Chicago White Sox Picks and Prediction

  • Pick: Cleveland Guardians Moneyline

I am taking Cleveland on the moneyline if the price remains reasonable. Chicago owns the stronger overall record, the better offense and a 34-21 home mark, but the starting-pitching disparity is too substantial to overlook. Messick holds advantages of more than three earned runs in ERA and 0.32 in WHIP over Schultz.

Cleveland does not possess the more trustworthy lineup, but this is an opportunity for the Guardians to generate offense against a struggling starter. Schultz has gone 1-5 with a 6.82 ERA over his last seven appearances, while Messick has posted a 2.30 ERA and a 0.98 WHIP over his last seven starts. If Messick provides six or seven strong innings, Cleveland should have an opportunity to protect a manageable lead.

Chicago leads the season series 4-3, and its home performance prevents this from becoming a high-confidence selection. However, the White Sox have scored only two runs across their last two games. I prefer Cleveland’s decisive advantage on the mound over Chicago’s stronger season-long offensive numbers.

  • Pick: Under 8.5

I lean under if the total is set at 8.5. Messick has been one of the American League’s most reliable starters, and Chicago scored two runs or fewer in three of its last five games. Cleveland has also struggled offensively throughout the season, carrying a .231 batting average and a .369 slugging percentage.

Schultz creates the primary risk because his 5.82 ERA could allow Cleveland to produce enough early offense to threaten the total. However, the Guardians have scored only 448 runs through 115 games and have hit 37 fewer home runs than Chicago. Their limited power makes it difficult to expect an explosive performance, even against a vulnerable starter.

The earlier season series also produced four games with seven or fewer combined runs. I would play under 8.5, consider under nine an even better option and pass if the total drops to 7.5. My projected score is Cleveland 4, Chicago 3.
