Tigers try to avoid historic collapse
The Tigers (86-74) have some work to do if they wish to avoid a piece of unwelcome MLB history. Back in July Detroit held a 15.5 game lead in the AL Central; now, after Friday's 4-3 loss against Boston, they are tied with the Guardians, who occupy first place thanks to a better series record between the two - if they do miss out to Cleveland, it will be the biggest collapse ever to lose a division since the division era itself started in 1969.
Detroit is yet to announce its starter for Saturday's game, a decision which will obviously be influenced by the playoff panorama. Keider Montero is a potential option having last pitched against Atlanta on September 20. The right-hander has made 11 starts and 19 total appearances in 2025, going 5-3 with a 4.48 ERA. He struggled while facing the Braves and was pulled after 3.0 innings after giving up three earned runs.

Sox close to postseason return
The Red Sox (88-72) are on the verge of returning to the playoffs for the first time since the 2021 season. With just two games remaining in the regular season, Boston holds the second AL Wild Card spot, 2.0 games ahead of the Tigers and 2.5 games ahead of the Astros, who will confirm Boston's postseason berth if they lose to the Angels on Saturday. The Sox look set to face arch-rivals the Yankees in the Wild Card round, with all three games to be played in Yankee Stadium. Boston overturned a three-run deficit to come through on Friday on the back of six scoreless bullpen innings; Cedanne Rafaela was the hero with a walk-off triple in the bottom of the ninth, one of two extra-base hits he recorded.
Connelly Early will take the mound for Boston on Saturday. The rookie has made a fine start to his career in the majors, going 1-1 with a 1.88 ERA in three starts and striking out 22 batters in 14.1 innings. Last time out, Early gave up two runs in 4.0 innings to the Rays to take his first career L. The 23-year-old lefty made the headlines after his stellar debut, in which he struck out 11 Athletics batters in 5.0 innings without giving up a single run.
Tigers vs. Red Sox pick
Spread Pick for Tigers vs. Red Sox
- Red Sox ML (4 units)
Both of these teams have been scuffling to finish the season, but I like Boston to come through in front of a big Fenway crowd and take the win. Early has been a revelation for the Sox since getting the call up and this matchup is a good one for him: Detroit went into Friday's game with a .679 team OPS across September (23rd in MLB) and it has now been restricted to three runs or fewer in seven of its last nine games. Boston is 47-32 playing at home in 2025. Whoever takes the mound for Detroit, it won't be one of their frontline starters - Mize, Skubal, and Flaherty are all unavailable - and that leaves the team vulnerable against a decent lineup in the Sox.
Take the Red Sox on the moneyline.
Over/under Pick for Tigers vs. Red Sox
- Under (5 units)
Runs have been hard to come by for the Tigers and unless they can improve fast against a dangerous young pitcher, taking another low score and the under at Fenway looks like the smart choice. Boston has also had a tough time scoring runs in front of its own fans recently, averaging 3.28 runs per game in its last seven home outings. The Sox are 34-42-3 on the over at home this year.
Take the under.
