Starting Pitchers

Detroit is scheduled to start Jackson Jobe, who enters at 1-2 with a 4.63 ERA and 1.46 WHIP through 23.1 innings. Jobe has allowed 24 hits and 10 walks while striking out 19 and surrendering four home runs. Cleveland counters with Gavin Williams, who is 13-7 with a 3.81 ERA and 1.09 WHIP through 163 innings. Williams has allowed 128 hits and 50 walks while recording 217 strikeouts and giving up 27 home runs. Cleveland owns the clear starting-pitching advantage, with the better ERA, substantially better WHIP and a much stronger strikeout profile over a far larger workload.

Detroit Needs More Consistency

Detroit enters Sunday at 64-77 overall and has struggled away from home with a 30-42 road record. The Tigers have lost four of their last five completed games, including both ends of Friday's doubleheader in Cleveland by scores of 7-6 and 4-3 in 10 innings. Detroit's only victory during that stretch was an 11-6 extra-inning win at Minnesota. The Tigers have been competitive in this series, but their recent results continue to show a team having difficulty turning close games into victories.

Detroit is batting .238 with 1,135 hits, 619 runs and 158 home runs while carrying a .314 on-base percentage and .396 slugging percentage. Those numbers give the Tigers a slight offensive edge over Cleveland in batting average, total hits, runs, home runs and slugging percentage. Detroit has scored 42 more runs and hit 25 more home runs than the Guardians, making its offense the stronger unit statistically despite the inferior overall record.

The Tigers have also pitched reasonably well as a team, posting a 3.72 ERA and 1.23 WHIP while holding opponents to a .234 batting average. Those numbers are slightly better than Cleveland's 3.75 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and .237 opponent batting average. The concern is the starting matchup, where Detroit faces a significant disadvantage. If the Tigers are going to pull the upset, they likely need their offense to convert more of its power advantage into early runs before Cleveland's pitching edge takes control.

Cleveland Holds the Stronger Starting Matchup

Cleveland enters Sunday at 72-70 overall and remains in the thick of the AL Central race, sitting just 2.5 games behind first-place Chicago. The Guardians are 35-38 at Progressive Field, but they have won three of their last five completed games and each of their last two. Both of those victories came against Detroit on Friday, with Cleveland winning one high-scoring game 7-6 and then surviving a 4-3 extra-inning contest later in the day.

The Guardians are batting .237 with 1,120 hits, 577 runs and 133 home runs. They own a .314 on-base percentage and .372 slugging percentage. Cleveland trails Detroit in most offensive categories, but the gap is not overwhelming outside of home runs and total scoring. The Guardians have relied more heavily on pitching and run prevention than offensive firepower, which has been enough to keep them above .500 and in the division race.

Cleveland owns a 3.75 team ERA and 1.26 WHIP while opponents are batting .237. Those numbers are close to Detroit's, but the Guardians have generated 1,322 strikeouts compared with Detroit's 1,141. The biggest edge comes from Sunday's starter, who carries a 3.81 ERA and 1.09 WHIP with 217 strikeouts in 163 innings. That gives Cleveland a substantial advantage in the opening matchup and is the clearest reason to favor the home side.

Detroit Tigers vs Cleveland Guardians Picks and Prediction

Pick: Cleveland Guardians Moneyline

Cleveland is the preferred side for Sunday's matchup because the starting-pitching advantage is too significant to ignore. Detroit actually holds small advantages in several team offensive and pitching categories, but Sunday's individual matchup strongly favors the Guardians. Cleveland's starter has a 3.81 ERA and 1.09 WHIP compared with Detroit's 4.63 ERA and 1.46 WHIP, while also bringing far more innings and strikeout production into the game. The Guardians have also won the first two completed games of the series and remain in the thick of the division race. At a reasonable moneyline price, Cleveland is the stronger side.

Pick: Under 8.5

Under 8.5 is the preferred target number. Both clubs own team ERAs below 3.80, and neither offense has been overwhelmingly productive over the course of the season. Cleveland has scored only 577 runs, while Detroit's 619 is still modest compared with many stronger offensive teams. The Guardians' starting-pitching advantage also creates a path toward suppressing Detroit's offense for several innings. Friday's first game was high scoring, but the second finished 4-3 after 10 innings, which better reflects the underlying pitching quality on both sides. Under 8.5 is the stronger total lean.

Final Picks: Cleveland Guardians Moneyline and Under 8.5
