A few weeks ago, the Houston Astros were cruising atop the American League West, but after a weekend sweep at the hands of the Mariners, they now find themselves one game back of the Tigers for the final spot in the AL Wild Card race. Can the Athletics cause some chaos in the AL playoff race?
The Athletics have long been eliminated from postseason contention in 2025, but with their young core looking to take down a division rival, they'll look to improve upon their 34-42 record at home to cause some chaos in the American League playoff race. Despite their overall struggles, the A's rank 13th in baseball in runs scored this year behind the likes of Nick Kurtz and Jacob Wilson, and if they can improve upon a 4.72 team ERA, this could be a team that's a playoff threat in years to come.
Taking the bump for the Athletics in this one will be veteran right-hander Luis Severino, who has put together a 4.72 ERA through 28 appearances in 2025, with the veteran giving up 159 hits over 156.1 innings of work. Last time out for the A's was a massive win over the Astros, with a single RBI to five different players as Jeffrey Springs limited his opponents to just one run over 5.0 innings as they came away winners 5-1.
