How will the Astros make the postseason?
A few weeks ago, the Houston Astros were cruising atop the American League West, but after a weekend sweep at the hands of the Mariners, they now find themselves one game back of the Tigers for the final spot in the AL Wild Card race. In the Astros' last 13 games, they've managed to pick up just five victories, averaging four runs per game in that time, showing that due to injuries and inconsistencies, they've started to slow down significantly in recent times.
In this must-win game, Houston turns to breakout star Hunter Brown, who has put together an amazing 2.30 ERA over 30 starts this season, with the 27-year old among the best strikeout pitchers in baseball, tallying 201 in 180.1 innings of work. Last time out for the Astros was a tough loss to these A's, with the lineup managing just three hits on the night as Cristian Javier gave up three earned over 4.2 innings of work, as they dropped their fourth straight game by a score of 5-1.

Can the Athletics cause some chaos in the AL playoff race?
The Athletics have long been eliminated from postseason contention in 2025, but with their young core looking to take down a division rival, they'll look to improve upon their 34-42 record at home to cause some chaos in the American League playoff race. Despite their overall struggles, the A's rank 13th in baseball in runs scored this year behind the likes of Nick Kurtz and Jacob Wilson, and if they can improve upon a 4.72 team ERA, this could be a team that's a playoff threat in years to come.
Taking the bump for the Athletics in this one will be veteran right-hander Luis Severino, who has put together a 4.72 ERA through 28 appearances in 2025, with the veteran giving up 159 hits over 156.1 innings of work. Last time out for the A's was a massive win over the Astros, with a single RBI to five different players as Jeffrey Springs limited his opponents to just one run over 5.0 innings as they came away winners 5-1.
Houston Astros vs. Athletics pick
Money line pick for Astros vs. Athletics
- Athletics (4 units)
Following the victory in game one of this series, the Athletics now hold a 7-3 record in their last 10 head-to-head meetings with the Astros, including victories in six straight games dating back to mid-June of this season.
Not only that, but the last time that Brown and Severino took the mound, it was the Athletics that came away with a victory, and given the Astros' struggles over their past four games, look for another big victory for the home team in this one.
Over/Under pick for Astros vs. Athletics
- Over 8.5 (4 units)
This pitching matchup is one that both teams can feel highly confident in, but when they've done battle recently, it's all about the offense as the over is 6-4 in their last 10 head-to-head encounters, with one team or the other scoring five or more runs in seven of their last eight overall.
For the Astros, the over sits at 6-4 in their last 10 overall games, with over 4.5 runs allowed per game in that stretch, and for the Athletics, the over comes in at 5-5 in their past 10, with five or more runs allowed in six of those games.
Keep it simple, take the over.
