Use Code SSWC In the opener of the last series of the regular season for both teams, the Angels (71-88) host the Astros (85-74). The Astros snapped their five-game losing streak in their last game, but are still chasing an AL Wild Card, and the Angels have lost three of their last four games.
The Astros come into Game 1 as a favorite posted at -150 with the Angels at +130 and the total sitting at 9 runs.
Astros Have a Lot of Work to Do
With only three games remaining in the regular season, the Astros are one game back of the Detroit Tigers and two games back of the Boston Red Sox in the Wild Card, but do not hold the tiebreaker against either team. They snapped their five-game skid in their last game with an 11-5 win over the Athletics, where Christian Walker had a three-run HR and Jose Altuve and Carlos Correa each had two RBI. Houston is 6-4 in their last 10 games and has won six of 10 games facing the Angels this season.
- On the season, the Astros rank a respectable 14th in the Majors in team ERA but only 25th in runs scored.
- Walker (.236 24 HR 85 RBI) leads the team in RBI and did not have any in six games before the three-run shot in the last one.
- Altuve (.265 26 HR 77 RBI) leads the club in HR and only has one in the last 10 games.
- The Astros had only totaled eight runs in the five-game skid before 11 runs in the last game.
- On the season, Houston is 39-39 on the road.
Jason Alexander (2-4 4.83 ERA 1.39 WHIP) gets the nod for the Astros and was lit up in his last start, giving up seven runs on seven hits in only 1 1/3 innings in a 7-3 loss to the Seattle Mariners. The Astros had won his previous nine starts, where he did not give up more than three runs in any of them. This is Alexanderβs first start of the season, facing the Angels.

Angels Look to Play Spoiler
The Angels will finish the season in the basement of the AL West can end the season on a high note, playing spoiler to the playoff hopes of their bitter division rival. In their last game they were at home in a 9-4 loss to the Kansas City Royals, where Mike Trout had a two-run HR and Jo Adell and Nolan Schanuel each had solo shots. L.A. is only 2-8 in their last 10 games and they have the third fewest wins in the AL.
- On the season, the Halos only rank 24th in the Majors in runs scored and 28th in team ERA.
- While Trout (.228 23 HR 61 RBI) reached the 400 HR mark recently and has gone yard twice in the last four games, he has had a down season.
- Taylor Ward (.228 36 HR 103 RBI) leads the club in at-bats and RBI and had three solo HR in four games before going 0-4 in the last game.
- Adell (.237 37 HR 97 RBI) leads the team in HR, ranks second in RBI, and has two solo HR in the last 10 games.
- On the season, the Angels are 38-40 at home.
Β
Kyle Hendricks (8-10 4.79 ERA 1.28 WHIP) takes the hill for game 1 and in his last start was solid, tossing seven scoreless innings and only allowing three hits in a 3-0 win over the Colorado Rockies. To say he has been up and down lately would be an understatement, as the Angels have won two of his last three starts, where he did not give up any runs while in the one loss, he gave up nine runs. Hendricks gave up five runs in each of his first two starts facing the Astros but was solid in his last start against them only giving up one run.

Houston Astros vs. L.A. Angels Pick
Houston Astros vs. L.A. Angels
- Angels +130 (+4 Units)
Β
The Astros are battling for their playoff lives and it is pretty obvious that losing five in a row recently did not help. The Angels have had a pretty bad season and have lost eight of their last 10 games, but can play spoiler in this series. Alexander was shelled his last start while Houston had won his previous eight starts. Hendricks has not given up any runs in two of his last three outings, but nine in the one loss in that span. Regarding the Houston Astros vs. L.A. Angels prediction, Hendricks has pitched well in four of his last five starts and will best Alexander in this game and the Halos will get the win and really throw a wrench in the Astros' playoff hopes.
Β
Over/Under Pick for Houston Astros vs. L.A. Angels
- Under 9 runs (+4 Units)Β
Both of the games that these teams played in their last one went over, but I am leaning towards the Under in this game. The Astros lit it up for 11 runs in winning their last game, but they had only totaled eight runs in losing the five games before that. They will not get much at the dish in this game, facing Hendricks, who has not given up any runs in two of his last three starts. Alexander is coming off a bad start, giving up seven runs, but he pitched pretty well in several starts before that. This game will be close to the total but will not be a very high-scoring game, so the Under is the pick.
