The Houston Astros and New York Mets close out their three-game series on Sunday afternoon at Citi Field in Queens, New York. First pitch is scheduled for 3:10 PM ET on August 30, with NBC and Peacock providing the television coverage. Houston enters the finale at 68-68 overall and 35-33 on the road, while New York is 61-75 overall and 32-38 at home. The series is tied at one game apiece after Houston took Friday's opener 3-1 before New York answered with a 6-2 victory on Saturday. The Mets are -126 on the moneyline with Houston at +104, while New York is +163 laying 1.5 runs and the Astros are -199 getting 1.5. The total is set at 9 runs, with the Over at +101 and the Under at -121. Before making your wagers for Sunday's action, be sure to check out our free MLB picks for more baseball predictions.

Starting Pitchers

Houston is scheduled to start Ethan Pecko, who enters at 0-0 with a 7.88 ERA and 1.88 WHIP through 8 innings. Pecko has allowed eight hits and seven walks while striking out five, with two home runs surrendered. The Mets counter with Zac Thornton, who owns a 3-4 record, 2.88 ERA and 1.15 WHIP through 56.1 innings. Thornton has allowed 51 hits and only 14 walks while recording 40 strikeouts and surrendering six home runs. The statistical advantage clearly belongs to New York's starter, particularly in ERA, WHIP and command.

Astros Look to Take the Rubber Match

Houston enters Sunday at an even 68-68 and remains atop the American League West despite hovering around the .500 mark. The Astros have gone 35-33 away from home and are 3-2 over their last five games. They defeated New York 3-1 in Friday's series opener before falling 6-2 on Saturday. Before arriving in Queens, Houston took two of three on the road against the Yankees, scoring nine runs in one victory and five in another.

The Astros have produced a .242 team batting average with 616 runs, 1,097 hits and 179 home runs. Their .317 on-base percentage and .410 slugging percentage give Houston an offensive profile with considerably more power than New York. The Astros have also shown the ability to put up runs recently, scoring nine against the Yankees and producing at least three runs in four of their last five games.

Pitching has been the larger concern. Houston carries a 4.63 team ERA and 1.36 WHIP while allowing opponents to bat .240. The staff has issued 553 walks while recording 1,186 strikeouts. Those numbers make Sunday's starting pitching matchup especially important because Houston is sending out a starter with only eight innings of work and seven walks already issued.

Mets Have the Starting Pitching Edge

New York comes into the series finale at 61-75 overall and 32-38 at Citi Field. The Mets are last in the National League East and 20 games behind Atlanta, but Saturday's 6-2 victory gave them a chance to win this home series. New York has gone 2-3 over its last five games, with both victories coming at home. Before Saturday's win, the Mets had dropped three consecutive games.

The Mets are batting .235 as a team with 553 runs, 1,068 hits and 163 home runs. They own a .305 on-base percentage and .388 slugging percentage. Houston has the advantage in each of those offensive categories, including 63 more runs and 16 more home runs. That makes New York's path to winning Sunday's game more dependent on preventing Houston from turning the contest into a high-scoring affair.

New York's pitching numbers provide more encouragement. The Mets own a 4.10 ERA and 1.30 WHIP while holding opposing hitters to a .238 average. They have also recorded 1,213 strikeouts. More importantly for this matchup, their scheduled starter enters with a 2.88 ERA and 1.15 WHIP, giving New York a significant advantage over Houston's limited and shaky starting sample. ESPN's Matchup Predictor also favors the Mets at 59.7% compared with 40.3% for Houston.

Houston Astros vs New York Mets Picks and Prediction

Pick: New York Mets Moneyline (-126)

Houston has the better overall offensive numbers, but the starting pitching matchup is difficult to overlook. New York's starter has worked 56.1 innings with a 2.88 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and only 14 walks, while Houston's starter has posted a 7.88 ERA and 1.88 WHIP through eight innings with seven walks. New York also showed Saturday that it can capitalize against this Houston pitching staff, scoring six runs in its 6-2 victory. At only -126, the Mets don't require the kind of premium normally attached to such a pronounced starting pitching advantage. Take the New York Mets -126 on the moneyline.

Pick: Under 9 (-121)

Houston has the stronger offense statistically, but New York's starter gives the Mets a legitimate opportunity to suppress that advantage. His 2.88 ERA and 1.15 WHIP are supported by excellent control, with just 14 walks across 56.1 innings. The first two games of this series finished with four and eight combined runs, respectively, keeping both below Sunday's number of nine. Houston's starter introduces some risk to an Under wager, but New York has averaged only 4.1 runs across its last five games and owns a .235 season batting average. With the total moved to 9, there is enough room to back another relatively controlled game. Take Under 9 (-121).

Final Picks: New York Mets Moneyline (-126) and Under 9 (-121)
